HUMN 9001D: Communities of Practice and Research 1 Assignment: Library Research Professor Garth Den Heyer Markita Folkes September 10, 2022
2 Assignment: Library Research Library Research Conducting library research is very important when it comes to deciding on a particular topic or issue. When conducting my library research, I took several steps that have guided me into finding resources that are related to my focus for the Capstone Project. First, I had to be very clear on what I wanted to research. For this particular topic, there will be a lot of time spent and dedication so I chose a topic that I am very interested in, have a bit of knowledge on and would not mind learning more about. Secondly, I did not spend a lot of time trying narrow the topic down because I will spend a lot of time refining the topic, the deeper I got into research. The next step that I took was identifying key words that thoroughly describe my topic. I felt that this was important because it will filter out and eliminate and resources that could possibly be unrelated. Next, I decided to look deeper into the topic by finding background information. By using the key words that I have selected, I was able to locate background information that also aided in refining my topic so that it was not as general or too broad. By completing the steps mentioned, I was able to use the research databases to find resources effectively. It is important to improve and refine research skills for this doctoral program because it enables students to identify key issues and collect informational resources that can assist with the issue. It also will help and guide the researcher into planning their research strategy effectively. The articles that I chose will greatly assist me in my journey as a human services professional. The topic that I have selected focuses on why it is so hard for participants to leave the housing programs. For example, the article by Shin, highlights the problem of inter-generational poverty in federal housing programs. By conducting research and using this article, it will better help me to understand the struggles that the participants have when it comes to getting off of the program
3 Assignment: Library Research along with any fears that they may have that are potentially stopping them from wanting to voluntarily terminate their voucher. From my experience, it is extremely hard to get into the program. Applicants will be on the waiting list for several years hoping that their name will come up. Coincidently, it is just as hard to get off of the program. Ideally, the program is designed to help participants with their housing assistance but it is not designed to assist for years, although, many participants have lived in their units for 10 + years. Conducting library research is very crucial when deciding on a topic. It is also very vital to understand the importance of improving and refining research skills in order to be an effective human service professional and/or doctoral student.
