Module Two Question 1 Describe one of the beliefs and values of the Navajo as illustrated in your readings. One of the beliefs and values of the Navajo that was illustrated in the reading can be found in their system of government, where the belief that talking things out can help solve problems. This belief is reflected in their court system, where the two parties meet and talk about the issue in order to find a solution that works for everyone and solves the problem. This shows how highly they value peaceful conflict resolution as well as the importance of words and talking things out in Navajo culture. Module Two Question 2 Describe one way in which the Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into the societal structure on the reservation since regaining some autonomy in the 1970's. Since regaining some autonomy in the 1970s, the Navajo Nation has set up a government that reflects the importance of words and mutual respect in their culture. A good example of this can be found in the legally sanctioned Peacemakers Court where the judges are chosen by the community and receive their power through the respect of the people they serve. In this court system, the person accused of a crime or conflict is encouraged to share their explanation for their behavior in order to help everyone reach a suitable resolution to the conflict. Module Two Question 3 What beliefs and values can be found in your culture? How do these beliefs and values influence your day-to-day life? Growing up in rural America, two of the most common beliefs and values that you will find are community-mindedness and a strong work ethic. These beliefs and values are integral to the culture of rural America and are something that was ingrained in me from an early age. When we work together and all do our part, we are stronger together. This influences my day- to-day life in a lot of ways but the most obvious would have to be the way that I am always checking in with the people around me and making sure that they have what they need even when I don't have much myself. Module Two Question 4 Adopt the social science perspective to create a list of questions about this issue. Write
at least two questions each from the point of view of a psychologist, a sociologist, and an anthropologist. 1. What lessons are we teaching, both intentionally and subconsciously, that affect a person's understanding of professionalism or gender? 2. What environmental factors impact the way a person understands and expresses gender norms? 3. How has the shift in the people who fill the social role of professor changed the dynamic of professional behavior and standards for that role? 4. What group behavior patterns on college campuses could account for the shift in what is considered acceptable or normal in a professional setting? 5. How has the culture in the areas surrounding and on college campuses shifting affected the way that the culture views and understands gender or professionalism amongst professors? 6. What traditions amongst college professors have changed or been altered because of this change in social norms?
