John Kemp EEX 3764 1 September 2021 Module 2: UDL Ted Talk Videos Reviews Video #1 - The Myth of Average: Todd Rose at TEDxSonomaCounty: In a manner reminiscent of Todd Rose's "cockpit," the success of an individual learner is largely contingent on the compatibility between themselves and the kind of education used. As it stands, classrooms are constructed in the same way that textbooks are—for the "average student"—not taking into account the wide range of individual differences in how people learn. If schools are designed for the average student, then they cannot develop the talents of all of their pupils. The normal educational setting is destructive to talent because it does not provide enough challenge for exceptional children, who may become bored and eventually quit out, and because it makes it more difficult to identify genius in individuals who may have other deficiencies. If we keep designing textbooks for the typical reader, we are doomed to fail. disallowing kids who are gifted in disciplines like science to reach their full potential because they have not met this reading requirement. In this post, I'll share what I've learned about the notion of UDL and why it's so useful for any educator. Even if it's just a general education course. "special education" students, individuals in the classroom have varying levels of receptiveness to, retention of, and understanding of course material. Taking a more customized approach, UDL ensures that every kid has a fair shot at academic success, which is why I think it's so important. No child fits the “average”, therefore, why should I design my lesson plans to fit that mold? Video #2 - Why We Need Universal Design | Michael Nesmith | TEDxBoulder: UDL is crucial because it gives people with disabilities or areas of weakness the tools they need to adapt and succeed in life. Products and environments with universal design are created so that as many people as possible can use them without any additional modifications or accommodations. A doorknob may seem like something that would be universally designed, but not everyone can use them. The success of an effort to implement universal design has a domino effect, helping people even if they do not have a disability.
Instead of being "impaired" by a disability, you may be inspired to create unique and helpful solutions that can help others as well. For me, the Ted Talk entitled "What I learned about the importance of the concept of UDL in my teaching" was incredibly insightful and motivating. It made me realize how much potential and talent we all possess as human beings, regardless of physical or mental impairments. Following Michael Nesmith's Ted Talk, I was reminded of the reason I want to become a teacher: to showcase the talents of my students and to show them that they are capable of achieving anything they set their minds to. UDL will allow me to do just that.
