Report
1 According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 18.5% of the American population (over 60 million people) identify as Hispanic or Latino” (Evason, 2021). At least four-in-ten Latinos are criticized for speaking Spanish and told to go back to their country (Lopez et al., 2018). This discrimination stops some in the Latinx community from reaching out and seeking help for their needs because they fear they will be ridiculed and will have a hard time being able to communicate. Poverty affects the Latinx community making it difficult for them to be able to afford the basic needs of life. Two major factors that make poverty so high in this community are the lack of education and low earning levels at work. “… one in three Hispanics and Latinos living in America report being discriminated against when applying for jobs” (Sauter, 2018). Mental health is another issue found in the Hispanic community. There are a lot of barriers when it comes to mental health which can include language barriers, lack of health insurance, legal status, and stigmas. Many Hispanics are taught to not speak about what goes on in their lives to anyone, and for many they do not speak up with the fear of being labeled as crazy within their community. With these stigmas in place there is a lack of information because individuals cannot recognize the symptoms of a mental health condition and do not know where to go for help. (NAMI, n.d.).
