Tamara A. O’Neal SOC: 326 Sociology of Deviant Behavior Module 3: Short Paper: Skewed View July 16, 2023 Skewed View The serial killer case I choose to analyze is Anthony Sowell. Anthony Sowell was convicted in 2011 of numerous charges including kidnapping, aggravated murder and abuse of corpses in connection with the deaths of 11 African American women in Ohio’s Cuyahoga County from 2007 to 2009 (Hackney, D & Hanna, J., 2021). When watching a media clip about Anthony Sowell via A&E and Oxygen, his acts were referred to as “mass murders” and he was referred to as a “mass murderer”. Speaker Pastor Jimmy L. Hill, compared Sowell to John Wayne Gacy and David Koresh which he referred to them as “mass murderers”. According to the resource, Anthony Sowell was not a mass killer as he did not kill the 11 women at the same time. Each body found in his home was found in various states of decomposition indicating they were not killed together at the same time, Anthony Sowell’s case has been covered on various true crime outlets, including podcast and other popular media coverage. In an episode of Snapped, and True Crimes television show in Oxygen Network, Robert Sberna stated, “Anthony received abuse from his mother. He stated Anthony told investigators in his interrogation that, ‘Abused children grow up’”. Anthony stated he and his siblings had been beaten by his mother and grandmother daily until they bled. It was speculated that this abuse could have been a factor in why he committed the violent crimes against women. This behavior refers to the myth 6 and 9 that all serial killers had a bad
childhood, and serial killers select victims who somehow resemble their mothers. These are the only myths that were present in the many media coverages I read and watched regarding Anthony Sowell. However, Anthony Sowell did receive sexual excitement from watching life fade away from his victims. His first victim was strangled to the brink of death and then brutally beaten and raped before she would die (This is Monsters, 2021). When reading about several serial killers before deciding on Anthony Sowell, I would many were said to have come from a bad childhood especially Aileen Wournos who was also referred to as a sexual sadist as her victim were her customers for which she robbed. Serial killer myths encompass various misconceptions about their characteristics and motivations. Some common myths include the belief that all serial killers are mentally ill, geniuses, or highly intelligent individuals. It is often assumed that they are loners, motivated solely by sexual gratification, and predominantly male. Another myth suggests that childhood trauma is always a contributing factor to their behavior. Contrary to popular belief, serial killers can blend into society, making them difficult to identify. Additionally, they are not always driven by a specific victim type but may target victims based on availability or vulnerability. It is crucial to recognize that these myths oversimplify a complex phenomenon, and understanding serial killers requires a nuanced approach based on accurate information and research.
