Diamond, The National Association of Social Work offers the greatest tool for social workers to live by, and in doing so, we, as social workers, can bridge that gap of mistrust in difficult situations that lead to mandated reporting. It is true that anyone can file a report for child abuse and neglect and there is a fear of retaliation on the person reporting. There have been a few times that I have had to report and was unsure what the repercussions of reporting would be because I was the only one who witnessed the abuse, so therefore, I was immediately outed after making the report. According to Steinberg et al. agree that the ability of the clinician to create a great working relationship with the client can optimize the effects of reporting child abuse and neglect (1997). Continuing education is also key in preventing damage to the therapeutic relationship when reporting abuse and neglect. The NASW code of ethics states that continued education must be done by social workers (NASW, 2021). Social workers can utilize training on building relationships and sharing what works for them with their fellow colleagues in regard to mandated reporting. Thank you for your post!
