The social construction of deviance. How relative is deviance? Functionalist views about deviance and Merton’s strain theory. Symbolic interactionist theories: Labeling theory, Stigma, Broken windows theory Formal and informal social sanctions The difference between street crime and white-collar crime (corporate crime). Who gets punished and for what? What is recidivism? Chapter 7 Stratification Definition and Characteristics of Stratification Views of inequality: Rousseau, Ferguson and Millar, Davis-Moore thesis. Equality of opportunity and equality of condition. Forms of stratification: slavery, estate, caste, class (Marx and Weber’s views on class) What is socioeconomic status (SES)? Evidence showing the social construction of race. Social Darwinism, eugenics. Race versus ethnicity Minority-majority group relations: assimilation, pluralism, segregation, racial conflict. Group responses to domination: withdrawal, passing, acceptance, and resistance. Prejudice, discrimination, Merton’s chart, and the colorblind racism. What is institutional racism? The future of race.
