2 Deviance and its Consequences Every day social norms change and create the world we are to live in and respect the way things are supposed to be. We are not to break laws or go outside of social norms, this is being deviant. Deviance is referred to any violation of norms, minor or major, by sociologists (Henslin, 2019., p. 165). A minor infraction of deviance could be jay walking and a major infraction may be murder, but either way they are both considered outside of social norms and are deviant behaviors. Consequences are done by what the action is that took place. For the jay walking, the person may get a warning or a fine to pay, but for the murder the person could be put on death row or sentenced to prison for life. A big social deviance that takes place that is considered socially acceptable is drinking and sexual behavior on reality tv shows, i.e. “Jersey Shore” and “The Challenge”. The tv show Jersey Shore has these deviant behaviors that have been socially accepted since the show premiered in December of 2009 and has continued to this day with now what is called “Jersey Shore: Family Vacation”. “Jersey Shore” was brought to television to show the world of Guidos living on the Jersey Shore for their summer while working and partying. The cast showed sexual behavior and partying with alcohol to uncontrollable limits within the first episode of premiering and continued as the seasons went by, including behaviors of using drugs, going to jail, and many more. This reality tv show was seen by many different age groups, but mostly ranged from the ages of young teenagers to young adults. The prime audience for reality television is teenagers and that they learn new knowledge, skills, and values that influence their lifestyles and behavior (Haq & Rahman, 2015). This was for anybody that had access to MTV back in 2009 and now you can watch this on multiple platforms including “Paramount plus” and “Hulu”.
3 The reactions of this tv show were overall risky in the teenager and young adult age category. More people wanted to live this lifestyle and wanted to be like them. Teenagers had the overall goal to eventually go to Jersey Shore and be able to live the life that they see on tv and think this is how we are supposed to live our lives but it’s not. Young adults started going and spending summers at the shore and living their life they way they saw these individuals on the show would live their life. Jersey Shore did not only teach young adults and teens to become party animals, but it has also taught them to help the community when it is needed and what family truly can be. In November of 2012, Hurricane Sandy hit the Jersey Shore and the cast helped fundraise to support and rebuild the home they loved. Unfortunately, they did do this by having things like ‘take shots with Snooki’, which did not help keep the drinking and partying behaviors down. Controlling this behavior is not a simple clean answer. Trying to take the show away now does not seem possible and it is controlling the outcome that comes from the reactions. As the show has grown and they are now filming the “Jersey Shore: Family Vacation” seasons, it is shown that they are growing up and settling down. It brings value to becoming an adult and what life can look like now. This show has helped people grow up and be able to become a better version of themselves. There is still deviant behavior on the show and yes it sometimes looked at as socially acceptable because it is on reality tv. But all these cast members go through social media abuse, no privacy in their lives, jail time, and many more consequences. Most of the time they are held accountable and have been throughout the seasons. Any young adult or teenager that went and had actions after watching these shows most likely had some type of consequence for their actions. As sociologist Howard S. Becker described it, “It is not the act itself, but the

4 reactions to the act, that make something deviant” (Henslin, 2019., p. 165). Always remember most deviant acts will have some type of consequence involved.
