In Chapter 4 of the textbook, you learned about agents of socialization, which are structured situations—for example, families, schools, the media, and peer groups—where socialization takes place. In other words, they are agents that teach us how to behave and help us internalize values, beliefs, and norms. You will use what you learned to help you prepare for this discussion post about agents of socialization. Gender divisions in toys is one example of an agent of socialization. Children's toys tend to be specifically marketed toward kids of one gender, either boys or girls. "Boy" toys tend to be associated with action, such as building, fighting, or playing sports, while "girl" toys tend to be more associated with domestic work, such as playing house, cooking food, or taking care of a baby. The gender division of these toys serves as one example of how children are socialized to understand gender roles. Read the New York Times article Breaking Gender Stereotypes in the Toy Box (Klass, 2018) to better understand the role kids' toys play in creating beliefs about gender roles. For this discussion, select one agent of socialization and describe a specific norm that a person might learn from that source. Be sure to describe the process of how the norm you chose is learned and internalized and give at least one specific example or piece of evidence. Finally, discuss how the norm might influence a particular social role. Daycare for young children serves as an important socialization agent. The specific norm a child learns from daycare is how to communicate and socialize with their peers. As a mother of three, I have witnessed the significant impact it has on our children. While two of my children attended daycare while I worked, my youngest had a brief time in daycare before I became a stay-at-home mother. Although her experience was limited, I recognize the value of daycare in fostering social interaction, teaching sharing, and preparing children for school. Without such experiences, children may struggle with social skills and adjusting to the school environment. I have personally witnessed the effects of early daycare on my two children, who spent a significant amount of time in daycare before starting school. As a result, they have developed better social skills and are more outgoing. However, my youngest daughter is an exception as she is quite shy and struggles with communicating her needs and wants. She also finds it challenging to interact with her peers and is anxious about starting school because she is worried about what other kids will think about her. Daycare can also allow children to be more open-minded and have a better understanding of the beliefs and cultural differences of their peers. “Socialization differs from family to family because each family has its own set of values and beliefs. The family’s own ethnic, class, religious,
educational, and political background can all influence a child.” (Ferris, 2022) While our own beliefs, values, and religious beliefs greatly impact our children, they can also be impacted by experiencing and learning about different beliefs, values, religious beliefs, etc., of their peers, even when in daycare. “When children begin attending school (including preschool and day care), it may be their first significant experience away from home. School helps them become less dependent on the family, providing a bridge to other social groups.” (Ferris, 2022) Daycare and social interaction can influence how a child communicates and socializes with others leading to them being more outgoing and open to try new things such as sports, clubs, and various social groups among their peers. Please use APA format to cite any references you use in your initial post and peer responses. When you select sources, use those that are academic, relevant, and recent.
