Starts Nov 25 Chapter 10 and the articles "A Decade of Research on the Rich- Poor Divide in Education: Many Studies Show Large and Growing Inequities" and "Why White School Districts Have So Much More Money" suggest that education in the United States reflects social stratification, which, you may recall from Module Four, is the division of society into groups that are arranged in a hierarchy. Your discussion posting for this module should explain the following: What does it mean to say that education reflects social stratification? Based on the readings, consider how educational reform could potentially break the cycle of inequality. What do you think individuals
can do to help combat inequality in education? What can social agencies do to help combat inequality in education? How is racial discrimination reflected in educational social stratification? Please provide evidence and specific examples from the readings or other sources to support your argument. Remember to use in- text citations and references when you use ideas or information from other sources. In response to your peers, discuss any similarities or differences between your opinion and your peers'. To complete this assignment, review the  Discussion Rubric . The education system reflects social stratification, resulting in unequal opportunities for students based on their family's wealth and location. However, educational reform can disrupt this cycle of inequality by advocating for equal funding and resources for lower-income schools that are often overshadowed by wealthier districts.
To address educational inequality, it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of educators by providing them with livable wages and support. Schools should also offer more resources, such as books, health clinics, food pantries, and homework assistance, to benefit students from lower-income backgrounds. I responded to a discussion post last week that goes along with this week's discussion well. This is a summary of that response just to show examples of how social stratification, specifically in our educational system, interferes with the education children are receiving. The disparity in education based on social class is a significant issue. I strongly believe in the value of hard work and earning one's rewards in life. My husband's dedication and effort in his career have led to his well-deserved salary and benefits. However, if he had received a lower-quality education, we likely wouldn't be in the same position today. This highlights the problem that arises from unequal educational opportunities. Regardless of race, gender, social class, or any other factor, every child should have access to a high- quality education. It is unfair for children to be deprived of equal chances to succeed due to their family's financial situation, social status, or race. My sister-in-law, who is a teacher, experienced firsthand the difference in education quality between schools in different communities. She witnessed the lack of resources and the constant stress faced by teachers in a Title I school district. This inequality became even more apparent when she moved to a wealthier school district. This disparity is unacceptable, and it is crucial to implement changes that provide every child with equal education and resources, setting them up for success rather than failure. This shows the important changes that need to be made within our education system and how much it impacts those that are affected.
