Madison Grace Gillespie Professor Sara Crider, MSW, PhD PROJECT COMMUNITY: SOCIOLOGY IN ACTION: Sociology 225 January 31, 2024 Journal #1: Researching Your Community Site I have had the opportunity to start volunteering at Carpenter Elementary School in Ann Arbor. Carpenter Elementary's mission statement is “ The Carpenter School community will provide a respectful, responsible and safe environment in which each student is academically, emotionally, and socially prepared to face the future.” ( Carpenter Elementary / Homepage) I believe from the short time I have been able to volunteer at the elementary school, that this mission statement is not only very accurate but prominent in the actions and environment within the school. From the very beginning of volunteering, I have seen the teachers work so diligently and patiently with the young children in order to help them learn and grow. As described in Michael B. Horn “ Begin With The End: What’s The Purpose Of Schooling?” He describes five specific aspects of schooling which include content knowledge, skills, habits of success, Real-World Experiences and Social Capital, and Health and wellness. (Horn 2021) From my short time volunteering at the elementary school, I see that Carpenter Elementary does in fact successfully show and teach the children that attend this school all five of these important purposes of schooling. Carpenter Elementary is a local public school that focuses on giving the best education to students from kindergarten to 5th grade. Their mission is to not only educate students but to also give them a safe and comfortable environment to learn. They do this in a multitude of ways such as having teachers assistants, volunteers such as myself who help in the classroom, virtual
learning labs, art classes, physical education, etc. By doing so they are giving students a high and well-earned education and are being assets to students' learning. I have been helping Mrs. Peterson by essentially being a teacher's assistant. By doing so I am helping her in the classroom with daily lessons and activities. A lot of my activities include helping students on their computers, playing learning games, cleaning up, and calming students down for important lessons. I believe that my work has been beneficial to the teacher because I allow for a second pair of hands in the classroom to help with such a large group of young students. All the students in the classroom are 5 years old and need a lot of time and attention which can be very difficult for one teacher to do all by themselves. I believe that my help is also beneficial because I'm getting hands-on learning and helping students learn as well. Although I do understand that I will be contributing to the classroom, I believe that they will be contributing to my growth significantly more. As discussed in Harleen Kaur’s “ Leaving the savior mentality behind” she states that “ it will be a learning experience for both communities, but especially yourself. The community you are entering may gain something from you, but the largest gain will be that they are willing to let you enter their home and space.” (Kaur 2014) I love this quote specifically because it expresses the importance of not only hands-on field work but the ability to go into an uncomfortable environment and learn the most you possibly can from those you are helping. I believe that the students have already given me many skills that I need to use within my field but also to work on. Some of the skills they have shown I need to grow in specifically are patience, understanding, and adaptability. One of the biggest initial Impressions I got of the school was its friendliness of staff and welcoming of students. This made it very easy to fit in and start helping in the classroom. I also believe that this example is a testament to how efficiently the staff is teaching students. As talked
about in Horn’s “ Begin With The End: What’s The Purpose Of Schooling?”A big factor of an educator's job is to not only educate them academically but socially as well and I believe from the kindness and inclusiveness of Mrs Peterson students, I believe she is setting them up for a very positive social environment outside of the classroom and inside as well. My site specification is in education, Although I am not specifically teaching the lessons to students, I am helping them learn and become educated from their main educator and helping students with confusion from time to time.
