Social Work Field Education I Social Work Ethics and Values Week 6 Announcements: Social Work Values, Ethics, Diversity Hello! Happy New Year Again! I hope you all are doing well and enjoying your internship experiences. I am looking forward to our discussion about Social Work values and ethics as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion in our practice of social work. We will have a robust discussion and if we have time, break into small groups to delve a little deeper and have an opportunity to share. In preparation for class, consider the ways in which you are privileged, the ways in which you are disadvantaged and how that impacts the ways that you interact with clients. Consider the ways in which your field agency is inclusive or not!  Please note this is often a difficult discussion for some so let's be sure to be self aware and empathetic. Before we do that, we will also have a discussion on ethics. One of your classmates asked a question:  Are social workers in the field are using flow charts for ethical decision-making or if this becomes a more organic and flexible process over time.  Let's Talk about it! Dr. Taliaferro Warren Assignments (check the syllabus and the modules in CANVAS) : Submit the synchronous meeting assessment (or else it will come up on your things to do list. Simply note that we did not have class due to holiday break). Community context slide/discussion - Complete this early so others can comment and you respond as appropriate. Diversity and Inclusion checklist Week 6 Discussion 1: Within the context of your agency, explain what your first choice of action would be based on the scenario you chose, and explain why you made that choice. Support your answer using the NASW Code of Ethics and your agency policy when applicable. Note:  Be sure to indicate which scenario you chose in the title of your response. ( Your Instructor will then post an evaluation of the scenario in general terms and how to think critically about it.) Scenario 1 You are in the first weeks of your internship, and you hear the employees discussing a client in the hallway. They are using terms like “junkie,” “loser,” and “hopeless.” How do you handle this situation? Every profession is guided by a code of ethics that establishes an ethical and value-based foundation for its practice (Garthwait, 2021). Social workers have responsibilities to their clients, coworkers, agency, and community at large, and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics lays out these expectations and principles (National Association of Social Work, 2021). I chose the first scenario because jobs that need us to engage with others usually expose us to personal information about them. Even in my present position as a juvenile court case manager, I often see my colleagues engaging in discussions about the problems they have unintentionally experienced with clients.
Social Work Field Education I While colleagues may establish a feeling of ease in discussing case dynamics, it is crucial to maintain the confidentiality of case-related information and only disclose it to the relevant staff members. Due to the frequent presence of clients in the office, it is usual for them to inadvertently overhear discussions pertaining to their own matters. The first ethical standard distinguishes certain obligations towards clients, placing particular emphasis on a dedication to clients, protecting their privacy and confidentiality, and strictly forbidding the use of profane language (National Association of Social Work, 2021). According to this policy, the fundamental job of social workers is to enhance the well-being of their clients. When acting in a professional capacity, it is essential to take in mind the possible adverse effects that the client may experience in terms of their well-being. When information is shared among colleagues, and the client has the potential to overhear it, it may provide significant obstacles for the client and impede their progress toward positive change. According to the National Association of Social Workers (2021), social workers are expected to maintain the confidentiality of any information received during their professional service unless there are compelling professional reasons to divulge the material for public consumption. Sharing information about a client often results in judgment, which can disrupt the connection that was meant to exist with the client. Suppose people are aware of any misleading information. In that case, the services that they deliver to the client may not accurately represent the efforts that they have put in. Despite the difficulties they are experiencing or the circumstances of their past, every client needs to be treated with respect and decency no matter what. When speaking about a client, employees must avoid using any language that may be considered offensive. If occurrences of this kind continue to occur, I will instantly contact the appropriate personnel so that they can manage the matter appropriately. Reference: Garthwait, C. L. (2021).   The social work practicum: Preparation for practice   (8th ed.). Pearson. National Association of Social Workers. (2021).  Code of ethics of the National Association of Social Workers .   https://www.socialworkers.org/About /Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English.aspx Response: Imagine that each scenario has changed in the following way: Scenario 1 You overhear the colleagues share that the client stated he wanted to “die,” and if he didn’t get admitted, he would “kill himself.” One of the colleagues stated, “He always says that—he’s never going to go through with it. Just ignore him.” Respond by explaining what your next steps would be in the situation, and explain why you chose those steps. Given the circumstances, we, as social workers, must demonstrate empathy by adopting the client's perspective. We must provide resources that enhance the client's general well-being, whether their first or recurrent disclosure. Irrespective of how often the information is received, we must recognize and respond to client concerns as a vital aspect of our obligations and duties. We must acknowledge that we lack the authority to evaluate their experiences.
Social Work Field Education I When faced with such situations, I would seek guidance from my supervisor to ensure that the client gets the required support while offering guidance and information to my colleagues. This involves highlighting the significance of acknowledging carelessness, comprehending the responsibilities of required reporters, and advocating for self-respect. It is crucial to approach these circumstances with a receptive mindset and convey empathetic sentiments. To prevent unfortunate mismanagement, it is crucial to avoid unpleasant emotions that may arise from rejecting persons in vulnerable situations. Hence, doing a thorough evaluation of clients and avoiding the influence of biases are vital in our capacity as social workers. Week 6 Discussion 2: Upload the slide from your Agency Presentation that relates to clients served and the diversity of the agency and its clients. Response: Respond to one colleague by comparing and contrasting the agency demographics and diversity with your own. Assignment: Submit   your completed Meeting Reflection document. Before submitting your final assignment, you can check your draft for authenticity. To check your draft, access the Turnitin Drafts from the Start Here area.
