Assessment 1 - Written Presentation of Advocacy Plan/Written Report Scenario 1 – Chole Chloe, a single mother of two, comes to see you because she is facing severe financial stress. She took leave from her job 2 weeks ago saying that she lacked the energy to get herself out of bed in time. Chloe cannot recall most of her leave discussion with her manager; as he intimidates her and considers her anxiety and depression as excuses. Her children’s father has not paid child support for some time and the parenting plan is not being followed. 1. The reasons why advocacy would be appropriate in this situation. The reasons why advocacy would be appropriate for Chloe would be that she has severe financial stress, discrimination and intimidation from her boss regarding her mental health, lack of child support from her ex- partner and Chole’s mental health issues. Chloe is under a lot of pressure and stress due to all these factors and she being dismissed by her boss and not being heard or having her rights upheld. 2. The social justice, ethical and legal issues involved (including the interests, needs and rights of the client). “Human rights are based on dignity, equality and mutual respect – regardless of your nationality, your religion or your beliefs. Your rights are about being treated fairly and treating others fairly and having the ability to make choices about your own life. These basic human rights are: Universal  They belong to all of us – everybody in the world Inalienable  They cannot be taken away from us Indivisible and interdependent  Governments should not be able to pick and choose which are respected.” CHCADV001 Page 7 of 10 Scenario One Chloe, a single mother of two, comes to see you because she is facing severe financial stress. Scenario Two Sugi receives in-home support and calls you because he often notices that some of his medications and money are missing after Joel has worked with him. He asked another support worker Amy about it but she just suggested that Sugi calls you. Sugi is not confident with English and still relies on his Tamil friends to solve any problems. Scenario Three Zac is in your youth group, and has become withdrawn. He says the youth refuge isn’t trying to find him work or somewhere to live. They haven’t had a meeting for him for weeks, while others have, and then they have moved on. He thinks they are waiting for an Aboriginal service to take him on.
Assessment 1 - Written Presentation of Advocacy Plan/Written Report (What are human rights, 2020) There are legal options of dealing with her ex-partner and her boss such as organising mediation with them to help come up with a fair resolution for them both. Her boss is also breaching the Mental Health Act 2007 by not providing Chloe with a safe and comfortable place to work. She can also be empowered to manage her own health and well-being by seeking help from a doctor for her mental health issues. She will be able to get a mental health care plan and her rights are covered by the Health Administration Act 1982. 3. Appropriate outcomes for the client from advocacy. The main outcomes to be achieved by advocating for Chloe are: * Get Chloe medical attention for mental health issues by encouraging her to see her GP so she can overcome her anxiety and depression * Secure unpaid child support owing by her ex-partner by contacting Child Support * Help her organise getting a mutual agreement / parenting plan in place with her ex through interrelate or Catholic Care so her ex-partner can have visitation with the children to allow chole to have time to herself to get better. * Resolve issues with her boss and return to work by suggesting Chloe consults with HR or a Union. * Find Chloe financial security by helping her contact Centrelink to ensure she is receiving the right payments. 4. Strategies for the client to move towards self-advocacy. The best way that Chloe can move towards self-advocacy would be making sure she feels empowered enough to do so. Some strategies and support I could offer are: * Encourage her to make phone calls to Centrelink, Interrelate, Fair Trade etc. So, she can understand her options so in turn she is able to take further action to assist with her problems * To educate and help her to feel confident about her own goals and skills * To use a strength-based approach by using what she has already achieved as examples to help her feel confident in herself. * Empower and support her to make her own decisions, specifically her making the choice to seek help for her mental health issues and to understand her options regarding her ex and her boss. (Teach clients to manage their lives, 2011) 5. Sources of support or information (e.g. client’s family, legislation, organisation policies, advocacy groups, peak bodies, etc.) and examples. * Family and friends can provide emotional support, help with the children and perhaps small amounts of financial support to help Chloe through this difficult time. * Workers Union and Fair Work (Ombudsman) can give advice and assistance regarding the unfair treatment in the workplace by her boss. * Central Coast Family and Support Services offers family support programs to help Chloe with the care of her children, as well as improving her parenting and financial skills. They would also be able to offer referrals for legal advice regarding setting up a parenting plan with her ex-partner. * Legal Aid can give advice and representation regarding a parenting plan with her ex-partner and will also help with the recoup of missed child support payments. * Centrelink can make sure Chloe is getting all the payments entitled to her, including possibly a crisis payment to help her asap. * Women’s Health and her GP can refer her to a counsellor or psychologist so she can get adequate help and medication so she can overcome her anxiety and depression. Assessment 1 - Written Presentation of Advocacy Plan/Written Report 6. An advocacy action plan, including goals, strategies, time frame and who is responsible. Additional strategies to the advocacy action plan if following the organisation’s complaint process does not achieve the client’s goal/s. If the complaint process does not achieve the client’s goals they can appeal or review this and we would explore other avenues on how best to achieve the right outcomes for our client. For example, Interrelate have not been helpful in organising mediation for Chloe and her ex-partner therefore I suggest another organisation such as Catholic Care in its stead. 8. Evaluation and review of the advocacy, including self-advocacy. To review the goals of Chloe’s action plan, I would have; * Regular meetings with Chloe either in person of over the phone to make sure she is progressing well. I would also ask her is she would like me to make follow up calls or emails for any goals she hasn’t completed yet as a CHCADV001 Page 9 of 10

Assessment 1 - Written Presentation of Advocacy Plan/Written Report way of encouraging and supporting her. * I would review her action plan to make sure the goals are being accomplished and Chloe is up to date with everything. The time frames may need to be adjusted to give her more time. * I could also change a service that wasn’t accommodating to her needs. For example, Interrelate have not been helpful in organising mediation so I would suggest she contacts Catholic Care instead. After successfully following her action plan, Chloe has accomplished the following; * The results of attending mediation are a Parenting Plan being completed which will make sure the children have regular visitation with their father to allow Chloe a small amount of time to herself on a regular basis. The topic of child support repayments that were not payed to Chloe were discussed and a court date has been set to get orders on having the funds paid to Chloe. * After contacting Child Support, Chloe has secured a regular fortnightly Child Support payment which will be automatically deducted from her ex-partners wage, starting immediately. This will greatly help Chloe get back on track with her finances and continue her care plan by self-advocating. * Chloe is seeking help for her mental health issues by attending regular psychology appointments, as referred by her GP, Chloe is also on medication and her anxiety and depression is significantly improving which immediately benefits not only herself, but also her children’s wellbeing due to her new found empowerment. * After contacting Fair Work Australia and also the Union, Chloe’s manager was given an official warning regarding his attitude and treatment of Chloe. He did not realise that his actions were affecting to that extent, so he has personally resolved these issues after speaking with Chloe directly. Chloe now enjoys being at work after having adequate time off and has no on-going problems with her boss. * References What Are Human Rights?.
