1 Module Two Assignment Stephanie J. Boling Southern New Hampshire University CJ-205-Q3960 Policing in the United States Instructor James Sartell January 21 st , 2024
2 Module Two Assignment Watchman Style Situation The watchman style of policing is “primarily concerned with order maintenance – maintaining order and controlling illegal and disruptive behavior” (Dempsey et al., 2019). This style is normally found in working-class communities. An example of this style could be patrolling a high crime area to help prevent further crime. In a scenario with disturbances, police enforcers can emphasize surveillance and intervention. This style is utilized in an attempt to keep the peace within the community. Culture Based on Watchman Style Culture has changed policing practices tremendously and continues to change. This agency values maintaining the peace rather than punishment. Depending on the crime, this form can be viewed as good or a bad thing in a community depending on the scenario. In a political stance, this agency could be aligned with community values versus an adhering to the law strictly. Legalistic-Style Situation The legalistic style of policing “enforces the letter of the law strictly by issuing many citations and making many misdemeanor arrests. Police proceed vigorously against illegal enterprises. This style of enforcement occurs in reform administrations’ government styles” (Dempsey et al., 2019). An example of this style could be giving a ticket to someone going 5 miles over the speed limit; the officer is upholding and enforcing the law. This could help reduce reckless driving. Culture Based on Legalistic Style
3 The legalistic style most likely values strict adherence to the law in organizational and political cultural. This style is helpful in maintaining professionalism and providing protection to the community. This agency political culture would be to condemn crimes as the offenders would be charged and prosecuted in a court of law. This agency can be a good thing but can also be complicated. Politically speaking, if this agency aligns more with the rule of law, then punishment could be prioritized instead of rehabilitation which is also necessary in some cases. Service-Style Situation The service style of policing “emphasis is on servicing the needs of the community. The officers see themselves more as helpers than as soldiers in a war against crime” (Dempsey et al., 2019). This style is normally found more in suburban areas. It would be beneficial in a service style of policing that the community could provide and suggest ideas and/or opinions for changes in the community. An example of this style could be an officer finding someone with narcotics on them and instead of making an arrest they could take possession of the narcotics and take the person to the next of kin/home or a substance abuse clinic to receive help. It would also be helpful to check back with that person routinely to make sure they do not retract, as this could eventually result in harsh punishment. Culture Based on Service Style The service style is likely to have organizational as well as political culture with values of community engagement and services. Due to the service style of policing is likely to be found in suburban areas, there is a smaller number of offenses. However, if it were being used in all classes of society including poverty and if we could lower crime rates in the lowest of classes; the world could turn into a safer and better place to live.
