2 One of my biases is that I’m not as culturally aware as I would prefer. As a counselor, this can be very damaging to my client because that would put me in a difficult position of understanding my clients, causing me to overthink; they are exaggerating about some matter they are experiencing, and I’m not familiar with. Although I grew up in America and America is a culturally diverse country, part of me is still very stuck, mainly in the old ways as when I was in my birth country, Haiti, I was still struggling to adapt. There aren’t many other foreign races in Haiti, so racism is something that I started learning about when I came to America. My personal biases could affect my ability to counsel a diverse population by not being culturally aware, which would be very harmful to my clients. Personal biases affect your ability to counsel a diverse population. Therefore, I must start getting cultural awareness to prevent using stereotypes on my client so I can properly understand their problems. Cultural racism has implications for counseling professional who must be aware of their cultural values and the extent to which their values may be different from those of their clients. Specifically, the counseling relationship and accompanying goals must make sense to the client while also falling within the scope of what the counselor conceives as therapeutic (Duan & Brown, 2016). Since the beginning of this course, my understanding of exclusionism and culture evolving is to exclude individuals who aren’t in the majority, such as gender, sexual orientation, race, and religion. When I think about culture, I think of how it describes us and makes us who we are. This course has been challenging me in so many ways. I tend to spend more time reading because I want to ensure I gain the knowledge not just to pass this course but also to gain the ability to understand and capture what is being said. Those topics will help me to be a better person and counselor.
