As a human services professional, removing a child and/or children from their home is one of the hardest things to do. Even if it's what's best for the child. In the human service profession, there will be many situations that will have your morals, ethics, and emotions conflicted both professionally and legally. There will be some situations where a human service professional is put in that may question their responsibilities. Human service professionals must always keep ethical standards in their minds. "Ethical standards for human service professionals help in the decision-making process" (Burke, 2015). In that situation, Standard 15 and Standard 19 apply. Abuse and neglect were the factors of the children being removed from the home and the parents want to be reunited with their children as soon as they can. Child abuse and neglect have contributing factors such as mental illness, physical illness, or substance abuse. With standard 15 "human service professionals provide a mechanism for identifying client needs and assets, calling attention to these needs and assets, and assisting in planning and mobilizing to advocate for those needs at the individual, community, and societal level when appropriate to the goals of the relationship" (Burke, 2015). The parents in this situation want to do whatever it takes to be reunited with their children and they want to properly care for them. All the facts of any case need to be known to do what is best for the children. To know if the child and/or children should be placed back in the care of their parents an investigation needs to be carried out. The parents should be provided with resources that will help them in properly caring for their child and/or children as well as how to parent properly. To get to the root of any issue therapy and parenting classes should be done. Human service professionals are responsible for helping the parents plan and mobile the resources they are provided with however it is on the parents to complete. The children returning home all depends on the parents and how soon they actively seek the help provided.
With standard 19 "to avoid duplicating another professional's helping relationship with a client, human service professionals consult, collaborate, and coordinate with other professionals to act in the best interest of the client" (Burke, 2015). Connecting parents to resources that will help them reunite with their children is the responsibility of the human service professional. This responsibility also includes addressing the parent's needs to keep positive progress in the future. Human service professionals can also connect with other agencies or organizations to ensure the best interests of the parents and children are being met. The most important thing is ensuring the best interests of the child/children are being met.
