Report
Human Services Ethics & Law in Child Welfare Candace Adelia Hart Southern New Hampshire University BA Human Services in Child and Family Services Michael McHenry January 28, 2024 Our textbook pages 189-190 is a case study about Gloria a mother of five who has been reported multiple times to Child Protected Services (CPS). Gloria and her children need food, clothing, and financial assistance. As an individual Gloria needs personal needs such as a medication routine regarding her schizophrenia, employment, and extra support. Jennifer (Child Protective Services Social Worker) has mentioned multiple resources in the community that could help Gloria and her children. The first resource in the community is finding a support worker who can connect and bond with Gloria. Secondly, Gloria and the children need financial assistance. Lastly, Gloria needs individual therapy and family therapy. Family therapy can help Gloria see that she has a support system. The children's safety is the primary concern such as eating, being watched, and clothing. Gloria loves her children and wants to do anything for them, however, with her schizophrenia it is challenging to provide necessities for herself and her children. Mental health issues have a massive effect on one's life. An example of Gloria's mental health affecting the children is a report to Child Protective Services (CPS) stating that Gloria had her children outside in the winter weather not wearing proper winter clothing. Gloria was using hot water in a restroom to warm the children's hands up. The risk Gloria is causing is making a pattern of not providing the children safety. Another Child Protective Services (CPS) report was Gloria walking in the middle of the street stopping traffic and yelling at one of the younger children to "hurry up" as the child was being left behind. By doing this the children could become severely injured, sick, or left by themselves. The risks caused concern for these actions to be reported to Child Protective Services (CPS). Gloria has been offered help on numerous occasions but was not receptive to others offering assistance. An additional resource that could help Gloria and her children begin a new path is the National Family Support Network their mission is to "... influence long-lasting improvements to the well-being of children, families and the communities where they live" (National Family Support Network, 2019). The National Family Support Network has many resources nationwide such as consulting Child Protective Services (CPS) on cases, providing families with direct services, and public policy assistance. Using this resource will give Gloria a different type of assistance. If Gloria used this resource she would also have other resources the organization offers. She will have direct support for employment, collaboration, and childcare. "Our approach is based on learning from and collaborating with those who are working to
improve the safety and well-being of children and their families ..."(National Family Support Network, 2019). Jennifer (Child Protective Services Social Worker) can help Gloria set up the connection between the National Family Support Network. Using this organization will allow Gloria to receive individualized assistance that is community-based. Resources National Family Support Network. (2019). What We Do.
