Describe how a culture of violence in high security prisons is perpetuated by the process of informal socialization. What steps could be taken by administrative personnel to address this issue? Could a training program be implemented? Would inmates be included in the process? A culture of violence in high security prisons is perpetuated by the process of informal socialization which is the beliefs, norms, and attitudes that inmates share with each other. This can also enforce things like inmate code, disrespecting authority, and using means of violence against others and each other. This can also isolate them from positive reinforcements like their friends and family outside of prison. Administration can use things such as behavioral therapy (anger management, and conflict resolution) or allowing inmates to have access to education, treatment for substance abuse, and mental healthcare as well as having consistent rules and reinforcement for inmates. A training program that educates staff and inmates on violence, specifically what causes it, the effects it has and how to prevent it, would be beneficial as the inmates would also be involved and it could potentially improve the amount of violence. Discuss how police departments attempt to overcome the negative influences of informal groups of police officers. Police departments can attempt to overcome the negative influences of informal groups of police officers by providing accountability and transparency (holding officers accountable for their actions and staying honest with the public) as well as having more community involvement which would not only all people to trust officers more but also allow for officers to be more aware of the people and the things going on in the community they serve.
Describe the role of ethics in a criminal justice organization. Ethics in the criminal justice organization ensure that people withing the organization are consistent and are in line with the values and goals of the criminal justice organization. They also help with public trust and reducing misconduct and corruption. Why do incidences of corruption occur? Corruption occurs because of personal greed, lack of ethical sensitivity, environments that accept and encourage corruption, lack of accountability, and lack of regulation and control. How can administrators reduce the number of ethical violations? In order to reduce the number of ethical violations, administrators need to punish unethical behavior, provide ethics training for all staff, provide transparency and accountability, as well as lead by example by doing what is expected of staff.
