Name: ___________________________________ SOC 201 Sexual Orientation Support for Marriage Equality 1. What is the characteristic you are exploring? What kind of a relationship do you think exists between this characteristic and support for marriage equality? The characteristic I am exploring is Age/Generation. I hypothesize that there is a positive relationship between younger generations and support for marriage equality. This is based on the general observation that younger generations tend to be more progressive and open to societal changes, including acceptance of diverse sexual orientations. 2. Look at the “fact sheet” provided in class. Describe at least three (3) trends you see in the data with respect to support for same-sex marriage. Silent generation seemed to be the lowest each year, there are a few different years in the generations where the percentage went down and not up, 2017 seems to be the highest especially for the millennials, was still pretty low for the silent generation didn’t go up much from 2016 to 2017. 3. On the back of this worksheet, sketch a graph or chart illustrating the data over the last several years.

Based on the general trends, the data seems to support my original hypothesis that younger generations are more supportive of marriage equality. This is because the data shows a clear trend of increasing support over time, with younger generations consistently showing higher levels of support. 5. Social scientists hypothesize that support for same-sex marriage increases ads more individuals have contact or relationships with LGBTQ individuals . Sociologically speaking, why do you think contact with LGBTQ individuals increases support for same-sex marriage? From a sociological perspective, contact with LGBTQ+ individuals can increase support for same-sex marriage because it humanizes the issue and breaks down stereotypes. When people have personal relationships with individuals who are LGBTQ+, they are more likely to see them as individuals with the same rights and desires as anyone else, rather than as abstract concepts or stereotypes. This can lead to greater empathy and understanding, which in turn can lead to increased support for rights such as marriage equality.
