Victoria Mejia Professor: Etta Haywood Subject: Criminology 1. Do negative labels cause crime? Or do people who commit crimes become negatively labeled? That is, label a cause of crime or a result I firmly believe that people who commit crimes become negatively labeled. For example, I can provide how people see my family and me. I have seen many past offenders who commit minor crimes, such as possession of drugs, have a negative label to them. Many individuals believe that those past offenders will always live a life of crime and that they should not be trusted or helped. I find it unfair to past offenders who receive assistance to exit the life of crime and turn their life around. I also think it is unfair for past offenders to have this label on them because the system does not provide the resources to help them recover. 2. Once weakened, can a person's bonds to society become reattached? What social processes might help reattachment? I always believe that a person can be reattached to society. I just find that the criminal justice system is unfair to past offenders because it does not provide the necessary resources and assistance for them to re-enter society. I always hear stories that past offenders would often be judged due to their past crimes and that it affects them creating opportunities to better the life of crime they are living in. I firmly believe that every offender has a chance to grow and to go away from the life of crime and that they are willing to re-enter society as a changed person. I firmly believe that if the criminal justice system helps past offenders and gives them assistance and opportunities, we can see them re-enter society safely and see the crime rate drop drastically. 3. Can you devise a test of Sutherland's differential association theory? How would you go about measuring an excess of definitions favorable toward criminality? I learned something similar to this theory in Forensic Psychology. I learned that many psychopaths who received treatment would never recover from their psychopathic tendencies. Studies have shown that it is possible that psychopaths would become better psychopaths because they are learning to mask their traits better. Sutherland’s theory states that criminals can become criminals or better criminals through human interaction. I believe that it is very testable and that it would show that criminals can become better at hiding the crimes they committed. 4. Can you think of ways you may have supported your peers' or siblings' antisocial behavior by helping them learn criminal techniques or attitudes? I feel that if I reached out to my very antisocial friends, it would create a chance for them to communicate with others. I have a beautiful friend, she has been a great friend to me since the
beginning of middle school. She was often silent and always kept reserved, however, people would not know how talented and smart she was. I never presented them with criminal techniques, I often just make sure they are doing alright. I always made sure she knew she was not alone, and that her feelings are important to me. Many of my friends would often tell me that I helped her branch out, and I would always believe that. I was never a reserved child, I was always outgoing, and always made sure my friends felt that they were important and contributed a lot to our friendship. 5. Do you recall neutralizing any guilt you might have felt for committing a criminal or illegal act? Did your neutralizations come before or after you committed the act in question? I have never committed a crime before nor will I ever commit a crime. I am lucky to have parents who were immigrants and see how the system would treat them if they ever commit a crime. However, I have done things such as lie or ignore my parents' thoughts and feelings. At the time, I do not feel guilty because it was benefiting me at the time. However, after a few hours, I can see how it affects them and continue to think about what I did to my parents. I always believed that if I lied to my parents or lied about what I am going through, it is silently breaking their trust, and I am against breaking that trust.
