Victoria Mejia Subject: Criminology Is there a "transition" area in your town or city? Does the crime rate remain constant in this neighborhood regardless of the racial, ethnic, or cultural composition of its residents? There is a city that I grew up in, it is called Metairie. It is about a half-hour away from New Orleans. Most of the population in the town is Latino, and there are many Latino families living there. When I was living there, I did not have much crime going around, it was more of a family-friendly neighborhood. I do know that the crime rate in New Orleans has been increasing, and I am not sure if the increasing rate is due to any racial or cultural traits of the criminals. I strongly believe that ever since the pandemic broke out, it was getting harder and more difficult for families to provide. Do you believe a distinct lower-class culture exists? Do you know anyone who has the focal concerns Miller talks about? Did you experience elements of these focal concerns in high school? Do forms of communication such as the Internet reduce cultural differences and create a more homogenous society, or are subcultures resistant to such influences? I believe that social glasses shouldn’t exist. Any social class that we see today, is truly made by the government. I believe that I grew up in the lower or middle of middle class. I never had any hardships relating to crime in my neighborhood or any crime in my city. However, I do have family problems, relating to my mother’s health. I have been researching heavily on how these class rankings are affecting households with a lower income. It seems to me that these classes would just create a larger divide between communities in the country. I believe that technology may be created a more difficult stance on this. I grew up without a phone or other electronics, of course, this was before my father became a citizen and got a promotion. I see that people would bully one another in any grade based if they had a phone, especially an iPhone, or if they had AirPods. In a weird sense, I thought the internet would connect us, it just seems that when the internet advances, so does technology. With these advancements, they just become more expensive. Do you agree with Agnew that there is more than one cause of strain? If so, are there other sources of strain that he did not consider? I agree with Agnew. I believe that there are many strains when it comes to economic strain. For example, illness. My mother suffers from liver disease, and our insurance
refuses to cover most or even all of it. It is harder for my family because I see my father struggle to be the only provider. This can further prove that this country does not truly care for the ill. Some strains can also include natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes. We can see that these disasters can affect a family's income, such as refilling resources or rebuilding property. How would a structural theorist explain the presence of middle-class crime? To the extent that structural theorists do focus on middle-class crime, they might attribute it to structural weaknesses in the community and family. They would argue that even middle-class communities today are less cohesive than they once were. The rise in ethnic diversity could be partly responsible for this. How would biosocial theories explain the high levels of violent crime in lower- class areas? The social element is important in explaining why levels of violence are higher in lower- class areas. Biosocial theories of crime argue that there is a genetic and biological aspect to crime. Some people are simply born with a predisposition to crime just as some people are born shy and others outgoing.
