CHLD 150 Supporting Children with Different Needs Video #1 1. Please write a 7-sentence summary of this video. The video is about ways to be inclusive in classrooms, how to work with families, and how to work with children with special needs. The classrooms are mixed with typical children and children with IEP’S. Children with disabilities are required to have Individualized Education Plans. Both groups of children work together when needed on skills that need extra support. Children are shown schedules with pictures to let them know what is happening next. Classrooms are more universal and accommodating for children. The children can have more access and also have their needs met. 2. What do you already know about supporting children with special needs? 3-4 sentences. I know that you should have patience when supporting children with special needs. It may take the children longer to talk and do things themselves. The children should be allowed to move freely and not be restricted to certain things. 3. Based on the video, what three strategies did you observe/learn, and what would you be willing to try as a future teacher? Three strategies that I observed/learned are having a schedule with pictures to show to the children, pulling children with IEP’s and the typical children to work together on details that need extra support, and sitting down with the family. The strategies that I listed are all something that I’d be willing to try. I enjoyed the idea of making a schedule with pictures and showing it to the children. It’s helpful as it helps the child figure out what they will do next. Video #2 1. Share your reaction to this video and two examples of how teachers and adults supported Tyler. I enjoyed the video and learned a lot from it. When I was younger, I used to believe that people with disabilities weren’t able to do many things. As I grew up, I learned that I was incorrect and biased. This video helped me reflect on my previous way of thinking. I am glad to have a new perspective and am glad to have learned more from this video. Tyler’s martial art teachers helped him by spending time figuring out ways for him to do moves. Tyler was able to do katas on his knees with the help of his teacher. Tyler’s aides help enlarge handouts, revise assignments, adapt testing, and help seat him where he can see better.
