Value: Service Ethical Principle: Social workers’ primary goal is to help people in need and to address social problems. 8 I have always helped others, especially in understanding addiction through my support groups like al-anon. I have lived through dealing with addicts personally and have a basic understanding of the effects it has on loved ones. Addiction is on the rise, especially since COVID in the areas of drug and alcohol abuse. There is no shortage of programs for addicts but for those affected by addicts there is truly little. I would like to focus on helping the partners and family members of addicts. Value: Social Justice Ethical Principle: Social workers’ challenge social injustice. 8 Social injustice is a problem in all areas of society. Because my focus is on addiction, I have learned that it destroys people in all levels of society regardless of race, religion, or socioeconomic status. While I have a basic understanding of addiction, I know there are areas I will need to grow in as far as how diverse cultures or religions may handle it or receive help. Value: Dignity and Worth of a Person Ethical Principle: Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of a 9 When dealing with an addict it is a fine line between compassion and enabling. I would treat someone in addiction or dealing with an addicted loved one with empathy and understanding. As a social worker I will have to teach clients to have realistic expectations in recovery. Those I plan to work with will need to learn to focus on their needs and that is something I will need to learn for myself as well.

Value: Importance of Human Relationships Ethical Principle: Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships. 10 I am a highly empathic person and am the person people who know me call for advice. I value all my connections with people, and their advice keeps me humble and gives me purpose. I can improve in this area by not letting my past experiences and judgement cloud me. I need to be engaging and helpful and remember I am there to help people improve their lives. Value: Integrity Ethical Principle: Social workers behave in a trustworthy manner. 9 Integrity is something I try and live by as well as teach my son about. I not only try to do the right thing but also stay honest to who I am as a person. In this area I will need to remember that the people I work with trust me and value my authenticity. This means I will also need to understand I am not always right and be willing to own up to that. Value: Competence Ethical Principle: Social workers practice within their areas of competence and develop 7 I have a basic understanding of social work and have friends in the field. I have some personal experience in the area, and I plan to go into it, which will help me with the skills needed. Because I am new to social work and still in the beginning stages I have a lot to learn. I do have a thirst to learn and know I will continue to pursue my education in this area academically and professionally.

Standard: Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to Clients 7 I would have responsibility for clients regarding competence in the services I provide as in any position I have held. I have no problem reporting ethical concerns where conflict, abuse, or inappropriateness is concerned. As a social worker it will be my duty to provide services to help them with their safety, goals, and relationships. To be better in this area I will educate myself on services to offer clients. Standard: Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to Colleagues 9 I treat my colleagues with respect the same way I would expect it from them. I see this as important in any job but especially one that requires ethical conduct. As a social worker it will be my goal to work in a positive environment with my colleagues. All communication will be handled with integrity. Standard: Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to Practice Settings 8 I am a person who allows everyone input as a team. I have worked in a supervisor position in the past and feel that communication and education are the most important. I believe my experience will travel over in making sure everyone is treated fairly. working in addiction this will be something I will be hyper focused on. Learning what to look for in clients will be a constant challenge. Standard: Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to the Social Work Profession 9 I am fair and honest in all aspects of my life. I will carry this over to social work and making proper decisions. It is my responsibility as a social worker to maintain professionalism in my colleagues and clients. This means I will learn to set aside self-care so that I do not get burned out or sloppy. I expect the same in social work with the advantage of being able to help those in need of it. I hope to get a better understanding of programs and opportunities to assist clients from all walks of life.
