Report
Milestone Two: Mapping the Issue SOC 112: Introduction to Sociology Chris Cogan
Social Issue Social Media and its effects on mental health 2
Cultural Beliefs and Biases Economic System-democratization of information which has allowed smaller brands to get a foothold. Before social media, you had to pay for all your advertising. Now every person is their own brand and it is easier to connect to people(Quora, 2017). This would be a positive relationship since social media can help you with your income and improve your standing in society. Subjective bias-Since social media uses large groups of users there can be a bias from information overload, cultural preferences, and shared values . This is a negative relationship since this bias can affect the information received on social media (Carrascosa et al., 2015). 3

Social Roles Social Media Influencer-This is someone who uses social media to influence people’s choices. These choices can be to purchase a certain item or wear certain styles of clothes. For someone suffering from social media addiction, this would be a negative relationship since following an influencer can affect the addiction (Geyser, 2023).  Social Media Addict- Addiction affects our roles such as our job roles and family roles. Addiction causes issues with how we interact with co- workers and our spouse and children.  4
Social Inequalities On this slide, identify and explain at least two examples of the social inequalities related to the social issue (Some examples of social inequalities include race, social class, and English language ability). • Age-Young adults are most affected by social media addiction. 15% of people aged 23- 38 admit to being addicted to social media. This would relationship would be negative since being in this age group would make you more likely to be addicted to social media ( Social Media Addiction Statistics: Who Is Addicted and What Are the Consequences? , 2023). • Income-Studies have shown that adolescents from lower poverty have higher rates of social media addiction. This is worse in schools where students have a greater wealth disparity. This would be a negative relationship since income has been shown to increase the rate of social media addiction (Collins, 2022). 5
Existing Social Conditions • School performance-Study showed that students addicted to social media did not have a change in school performance, but did have lower self- esteem and poorer health. This is a negative since it would affect the student’s everyday interactions with lower self-esteem and health issues ( Effects of Social Networking Services on Academic. . . : Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care , n.d.). • Health- People with social media addiction show they get poor sleep and have more instances of mental health problems. This would be a negative since social media addiction can cause negative health issues ( Social Media Addiction Statistics: Who Is Addicted and What Are the Consequences? , 2023). 6
