ECED 202 Documentation Template Week 5 Check-In Area 1. In the hallway of the center there were found to be no outlet plug guards installed on some of the outlets. This is considered a deficiency as this is a hazard and if a child were to stick something in there it can cause an electric shock or worse. 2. In the 3-year-old classroom it was found that the child safety latches on the cupboards containing the cleaning supplies were faulty and inoperative. This is a deficiency as children can get into this cabinet open the items and cause poisoning to themselves or other children, or it can cause skin irritation and rash this is very harmful for the children, and it is not safe all cupboards need to be properly sealed. 3. In the 12–18-month-old room a child with a fever of 101 degrees was not sent home within a two-hour time frame this is a deficiency as it allows other children in the room to get sick because this child could be contagious which is causing a spread of sickness. 4. In the infant room there was a case of hand foot and mouth disease but there was no information posted for parents to review to understand the symptoms this is a deficiency as it does not give the parents enough information as to what the illness is or causes the illness. Not only that, the center is not following the proper rules and regulations of notifying the parents when a child is contagious. 5. In the two-year-old room it was observed that the staff member changing diapers did not change the gloves in between diaper changes this is a deficiency as it is unhealthy to change children with the same type of gloves and it can also cause the spread of sicknesses and illnesses with bacteria. Description of how the concern(s) were addressed As an early childhood educator administrator, I would address these issues to make sure that at the end of the day and every morning a staff member is available to go around and check rooms to make sure that all plugs are properly covered so that no children can get hurt. Also, I would be checking the rooms to make sure that all cabinets and areas that need to be sealed for the safety of the children. This way we can have the proper working equipment that is needed. If it is working properly, I would be sure to go out that day and get what I needed and fix it to make sure it would not be an issue. For the child that has a fever of 101° and is not being sent home within the two-hour window, I would be calling the parents to remind them about our policy on pick-up times that it is very important that if they cannot get there in time that they can have someone on their pickup list pick up their child if they are available. Secondly, I would have that child removed from the classroom and placed in a sick area which possibly would be in the office away from children so they would not spread any illnesses to any other children in the classroom or center. With the case of hand foot and mouth disease, I would make sure that not only do my staff members know, but that I would print something out from the occl. (Office of Childcare Licensing) that briefly describes what hand foot and mouth are and ways to prevent it
as well as the signs. If parents did not take this paper home, I would also use an app like Brightwheel to update a picture of hand, foot, and mouth this way they would have access to it there as well. This would give not only the staff members a chance to tell the parents but also protect us by being able to provide it through an app so that we know that parents are getting it one way or another. When it comes to staff members changing diapers, I would remind them that the proper ways to change a diaper are to sanitize and change their gloves and wash their hands after every child. I would make sure that there is a poster placed above all the diaper changing tables to show them the proper steps as well as to make sure that they can observe me while doing diaper changes so that they can see how it is done properly. Explanation of Best Practice The best practice for this would be to establish a safe, healthy learning environment by doing things to ensure that the staff and children are safe while at the center. To support social and emotional development and provide positive guidance- giving guidance to the staff in a positive way can help them better understand what is needed and how to do things properly. To establish positive and productive relationships with families- Keeping the families in the loop when it comes to things at the center builds relationships with the parents which then turns into trust. To maintain a commitment to professionalism- being able to know where I stand and support my staff and care for the children and be professional in all manners speaking, doing what is needed for the center. Next Action Steps As I mentioned above, the plans that I'm going to ensure are in place is to make sure that I have staff that will be doing routine checks of all classrooms and hallways and any room in the center to make sure that all outlet covers are covered. If not make sure they get covered before a child comes into the center. I would make sure to remind parents about our policies when it comes to children and their illnesses so that we do not have an incident where a child is left at the center for a 2-hour window without being picked up. I would also make sure that I do weekly checks with my staff to make sure that everything is properly safe, and equipped for all classrooms to make sure that our children cannot get into anything harmful. I will make sure I remind parents to always check their brightwheel for any messages that could pertain to illnesses or anything else that involves the center as well as to check in with their teacher. I will remind parents to let us know if their child becomes ill and is said to be contagious so that we can inform other parents in the classroom or the center. As I had mentioned above when it comes to changing diapers make sure that all staff members are properly trained before running a classroom or even being trained in a classroom that they completely know and understand how important it is to change gloves, sanitize, wash hands, and follow all rules and regulations when it comes to proper safety of diaper changing.
