In what settings do generalist social work practitioners perform their functions? Name an agency in your community where social work is performed that is of personal interest to you. What is the purpose of this agency? Why is this type of social work interesting to you? Generalist social work practitioners can perform their functions in many different settings such as nursing homes, domestic violence programs, shelters, community mental health programs, alcohol and substance abuse facilities, treatment programs, advocacy agencies, crisis centers, prisons, family counseling centers, hospitals, and hospices. There is an unlimited number of settings for a social worker. An agency in Conway, SC where social work is performed that is of personal interest to me is Agape Hospice of the Grand Strand/ Agape Care Group. The purpose of Agape Hospice of the Grand Strand is to provide the highest level of care, comfort, and support for a meaningful experience possible to patients facing life-limiting illnesses and their families. Patients will be treated like a person, not a number. In every interaction, no matter how big or small, each patient will have the right level of support at every stage of their journey. My educational plan is to obtain my master's degree and become a Clinical Social worker. I want to improve the lives of individuals in your community. I know that social work can be difficult at times, but it can also be highly satisfying. I want a real opportunity to help others make changes in their lives that can set them on a course for better physical or mental health. The work we do as social workers can have a ripple effect on many people’s lives. I want to be that person to help make a difference. How are social workers different from other professionals who do similar work supporting clients (such as psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, sociologists, nurses, law enforcement officers, and public health officials)? As stated above, social workers can be considered a type of therapist. “Therapist” is a title for a few different professionals who attempt to understand a person’s thoughts, feelings, emotions and behavior. Psychologists , licensed professional clinical counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, pastoral counselors and psychiatric nurse practitioners are also professionals who are trained to offer psychotherapy. They support individuals (and sometimes communities) to live more fulfilling lives. However, there are some differences between therapy provided by social workers vs. therapists of other kinds. Social workers focus on helping people deal with challenging situations while other therapists treat mental or physical disorders or diseasesExternal link:open_in_new . Psychologists may conduct studies or experiments to understand how people work. Psychiatrists have medical trainingExternal link:open_in_new . They hold a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic medicine degree. After earning their degree in medicine, psychiatrists specialize in psychiatry. Psychiatrists mainly focus on the biological aspects of mental illness and are able to prescribe medication to rectify chemical imbalances that sometimes cause mental illness. Social workers, on the other hand, work with people to address problems and work through difficult experiences. They may provide support during a divorce, illness or unemployment. Social workers do not have a medical background, though some social workers can also diagnose and treat behavioral, emotional and mental issues or disorders. These social workers are called clinical social workers or licensed clinical social workers. Clinical social workers need to complete additional training and meet specific licensure requirements. In what way might a social worker support a client that other helping professionals may not? Social workers can support clients in ways that other professionals may not. For example, they can help clients navigate complex systems (like healthcare or social services), advocate for their rights, connect them with community resources, and provide emotional support and counseling. Why is cultural competency with diverse populations important in the social work profession? Cultural competence in health care addresses the disparities that people of racially and culturally diverse backgrounds often experience. It can ensure all patients get the care they need to live healthier lives Cultural competence in social work practice implies a heightened consciousness of how culturally diverse populations experience their uniqueness and deal with their differences and similarities within a larger social context. Concurrently, cultural competence requires social workers to use an intersectionality approach to practice, examining forms of oppression,

discrimination, and domination through diversity components of race and ethnicity, immigration and refugee status, religion and spirituality, sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, social class, and abilities. Furthermore, it requires social workers to acknowledge their own position of power vis-à-vis the populations they serve and to practice cultural humility (Tervalon & Murray-Garcia, 1998). The achievement of cultural competence is an ongoing process. Cultural competence is not just a statement of quality practice. Cultural competence also requires advocacy and activism. It is critically important to provide quality services to those who find themselves marginalized; and it is also essential to disrupt the societal processes that marginalize populations. Cultural competence includes action to challenge institutional and structural oppression and the accompanying feelings of privilege and internalized oppression. Although these standards and their accompanying indicators describe an ideal state, the National Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity (NCORED) encourages social work practitioners and agency leaders to put forth good faith efforts to use them What are some risks of culturally incompetent social workers? Barriers to cultural competence in social work include an unwillingness or disinterest among some practitioners to learn about different cultures or ethnic groups. Some social workers may lack experience and knowledge with certain groups and fail to uphold their ethical responsibility to learn about their clients. How can a social worker improve their own cultural competency to support individuals from various demographics, such as socioeconomic class, age, gender or sex, sexual orientation, race, or ethnicity? How can social workers improve cultural competence? Social workers need to expand their cultural religious traditions, spiritual belief systems, knowledge, and expertise by expanding their understanding of the following areas: “the impact of culture on behavior, attitudes, and values; the help-seeking behaviors of diverse client groups; the role of language, speech ...
