Free Range Parenting Group Activity As a group, discuss and give a creative, critical, and specific response to the following questions. You will meet in Zoom, record the session, and submit the link to your group’s recording. Please read the following article: Kids’ Solo Playtime Unleashes ‘Free-Range’ Parenting Debate The article explores a concept called “free-range parenting,” where parents raise children in a way designed to foster independence and limit parental supervision. However, as the article mentions “what is considered free-range by some can look like neglect to others.” Does free-range parenting qualify as neglect according to the definition in your textbook (pg. 193)? Why or why not? -I think that free-range parenting can qualify as neglect in certain instances. Depending on the situation, leaving a child alone can be seen as neglect. If the child is home alone for extensive long periods of time, it can be seen as neglect. Could free-range parenting lead to long-term issues with delinquency? -I feel that free-range parenting can lead to long-term issues with delinquency. Being unsupervised for long periods of time can ensure that the parent is unaware of what is happening in their child’s life. The child can get into more trouble without punishment. This can lead to higher levels of crime and can continue on until they are caught by law enforcement.
2. The article shows a graphic of what the minimum age is in each state for children to be allowed at home. What age do you think should be the minimum, and why? Please consider the developmental theories from chapter 5. -I think the minimum age a child should be allowed at home is 12 years old. At this age they are able to complete the necessary tasks in their lives. They can safely feed themselves, dress themselves and keep themselves occupied. They can work the television and other electronics that will help them stay occupied and they are able to understand when to call 911 or what to do in case of an emergency. 3. John Myers, a family law professor, is quoted as saying, "We hate to say that the people that live in those two communities ought to be treated differently because we would probably get into uncomfortable issues of socioeconomic status and ethnicity…But that's the reality in our country." How do you think issues of independence and neglect differ in neighborhoods with high poverty levels? -I think there is a strong correlation between issues of independence and neglect depending on neighborhoods with high poverty levels. In a neighborhood that is high in poverty, there tends to be a more dangerous environment. In these communities there are more gangs and crimes happening on the streets. If kids are left alone in these areas, there are more opportunities for them to be harmed or get into criminal activity.
