Amber Worlton 4/3/2021 Social Work Exam 3 The Wheatley House run by W. Gertrude Brown typified which approach to social problems? What was unusual about Wheatley House? (Identify three specific points and briefly explain each). What has happened to this type of approach within the field of social work? Why do you believe this has occurred? Briefly explain. -The Wheatley House run by W. Gertrude Brown typified more of an integrated and multilevel approach to social problems. This was because she involved everyone including idividuals as well as communitites and neighbors. Her main goal was to include and help everyone from child age to adults. One thing that was unusual with the Wheatley house is this exact reason. They were so inclusive of everyone and they ultimately just wanted to make a difference and help people. The Wheatley House was a safe place for everyone to go, not just those who were struggling. Another thing that stood out to me as unusual was the fact that there was no bias towards a race or gender. During this time, racism was prominent against those of the African American or “black” race. They were treated as less than a person and were constantly being victimized because the color of their skin. W. Gertrude Brown was loving towards every person, it didn’t matter the color of their skin. She treated everyone the same and wanted every single person to feel safe and like they could get help if they needed. The last thing I found unusual was just how much help was offered and provided to those in need. There were resources and care for expecting mothers, shelters for families and children who didn’t have homes, a safe area for kids to learn and play as well as activities for everyone to get involved in. Identify a social issue that was brought out in the case of the Smith family (PBS Documentary by the same name watched in class) which you found interesting or which you believe might be difficult to for you to work with. Discuss briefly biases you have which might interfere with your ability to work with this situation/issue. What could you do to insure your biases do not negatively affect your ability to work with this situation? How many people were homeless in 2017 in the United States? (You will need to do some research to answer this question and be sure to cite your source for full points) Imagine you are a social worker. Briefly describe a situation in which you might need to address a problem with housing. o How might you intervene as a social worker? (Identify at least three alternative solutions). Select the solution you think is best and explain why you would recommend this approach. (Keep in mind social work values). Briefly explain which perspective (liberal, conservative, or other) would be the most likely to favor your choice of response and why? Consider the work of Jane Elliot and the way in which she intervenes to help people change their behavior (based on the assignment with Jane Elliot and the video, The
Angry Eye). Why is the issue of discrimination (as reflected in racism, sexism, ableism, and other areas) so important to social workers? (Take your time.)
