Anne Ortiz December 5, 2023 SPD 521 Professor Moore Clinical Field Experience A: 1. Do you feel the co-teaching model was successful? If yes, explain. If not, which model do you feel would be more appropriate to meet the needs of the students? a. Yes, the co-teaching model worked well for this reading lesson. The one teaching, one assisting method was utilized. The lesson was taught in a whole group manner and the para walked around checking in on the students she services with IEP’s. When the whole group instruction was complete, the para was able to sit in a small group with these students providing additional support as the students needed it. 2. Were all students actively participating and receiving support during instruction? If yes, explain. If not, why do you think students were not participating or engaging? Could additional support be added? a. Some of the students were not as engaged during the lesson, this is something we are seeing more in our school as students are more frequently struggling to focus even with the lesson being more interactive. We have seen an increase of students since COVID-19 struggle to be focused during lessons. I feel as this is something that is happening in many schools with the number of students who began school in an online format in 2020. I don’t know that any additional support would help with this situation. 3. Do you feel there was clear collaboration and communication between the teachers and/or paraeducator during instruction? If yes, explain. If not, what concerns or inconsistencies with instruction did you notice? a. The teacher and paraprofessional seemed to communicate well and things seemed to be seamless in the classroom during and after the lesson. If the paraprofessional
had any questions throughout the duration of her helping with small group work the teacher would gladly answer and explain things. 4. Why is it important for the teacher and paraeducator to be in sync when utilizing co- teaching methods? a. This is important because the paraprofessional is in the classroom to provide additional support to the students and although some of these students may have modified work, if this is not communicated with the teacher than the students may not receive the assistance they need. Them being in sync has to happen for the co- teaching to exist. 5. Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice? a. As a special education teacher, I currently utilize a lot of what I observed during this field experience. Dependent upon the special education program I have worked in I frequently stay in communication with the general education teachers to figure out what is planned in their classroom and what they are working on, so that I can supplement that when working with the students in pullout small groups.
