2 Essay: Lay Counseling Assignment This paper will set out to answer the questions below using research and data from reliable sources such as scholarly journals, our textbook, and the Bible. What are the advantages of lay counseling? What are the disadvantages? Though it has less prestige and requires fewer qualifications, lay counseling has several admirable attributes. Nonetheless, it's critical to recognize lay counseling's benefits and drawbacks. A less demanding training curriculum for certification may be a disadvantage, but the lay counselor's familiarity with God's Word and inspiration from the Holy Spirit exceed this. While it is not implied that licensed therapists or counselors are not guided by the Holy Spirit, a greater percentage of lay counselors than licensed counselors place a larger priority on following the Lord. Expound on one ethical consideration for the lay counselor discussed in the Sanders text. A situation from the Sanders text where a lay counselor must decide whether to report a client's problem to the Church for disciplinary action poses a serious ethical dilemma. Although the textbook discourages this kind of exposure, it does recommend that the client be encouraged to confess their faults to the church. In the event that a counselor chooses to share a client's information with the church for disciplinary reasons, the book suggests giving the client advance warning before starting any sessions (Sanders, 2013). This situation is a close parallel to Matthew 18:15–17's advice to believers to quietly confront the immorality of another believer. If the first encounter proves fruitless, Matthew advises enlisting the help of a few additional
3 Christians and permitting the Church to step in if the issue continues. Matthew tells believers to consider a person in sin as lost if they don't respond to the Church at all (NASB, 1995). Review and Analyze Chapter 20 in the Sanders Text. What are Some of the Areas Discussed in Which Lay Counselor Training is Needed? All of These are Important, but Which One Would You Say is Most Important and Why? Understanding a person's unique decision-making history is, in my opinion, one of the most important training topics for lay counselors (Sanders, 2013). People are easily influenced and are shaped by the relationships they have with other people. Our upbringing and environment can have a big impact on how we make decisions and how we view events (Chen et al., 2018). Counselors must understand that their personal experiences and upbringing can influence their decisions because of these reasons. Gaining the capacity to identify individual impacts from one's childhood is essential when offering advice to others. Counselors need to be careful to follow God's Word without letting their surroundings or upbringing have an undue influence on them. What are your overall thoughts on lay counseling at this point in the course? Are you planning to be a lay counselor? Why or why not? I find it very exciting when I consider the idea of becoming a lay counselor. Frequently, the rules and restrictions associated with fully licensed counseling can make it difficult for us to offer biblical support and share Godly inspiration. I want the freedom to always follow the

4 Lord's direction as a counselor. The only judgment I am concerned about facing is God's judgment, and I wish to conduct myself accordingly. I do not wish for my calling or career to be in the hands of men. Maybe down the road, the Lord will make it very evident that He wants me to become a lay counselor. I'm still open to whatever job path The Lord has in store for me until I have that insight.
