Anne Ortiz SPD 521 December 19, 2023 Professor Moore Clinical Field Experience B: Collaboration is necessary to build and grow relationships with students, their families, and service providers. It is important as a special education teacher to develop relationships with service providers within the school and district as well as in the community to help families find the resources necessary to support their child in being successful. These resources may look different for each student and family depending upon the needs, but can include formal services such as behavioral care through ABA services or a day facility to informal services of coordinating a weekly food basic through community pantry. While collaborating with my mentor I was able to discuss some of the different types of support we have utilized within our school district, and we have discovered that since COVID-19 many of the supports that are in our community are not as easily accessible. However, through collaboration with other case manager or service providers, we have learned that our school social worker has a number of resources that she is able to help bring to the table for families. Both the school and outside agencies oversee services provided, depending on the services being provided. Outside agencies may provided services to include mental health services through the community clinic. In many cases these services are covered by insurance
such as Medicaid and there is no cost to the family, or a very small co-payment. With the consent of the family these resources can communicate with the school to help provide insight for the family and school case manager. Resources can be shared with the family in s simple phone call or email, but can also be put together and given to the family in a meeting setting. The support provided outside of the classroom are very important to continue. Without these services in place the child could see a regression in academic performance, or an increase in behavior issues leading to potential out of school suspensions. The importance of these services for both the student and the family is to give them the best opportunity to succeed and thrive in their environment, this should include academic performance. Some challenges outside of the school day could be transportation, and cost for service providers. These challenges may make it difficult to provide the child with the consistent help they may need. With the help of our social worker the teacher works with other community organizations to help provide solutions, so that they aren’t left in need of help. As a current special education teacher, I have learned that we cannot expect for the students to succeed in school if they have underlying outside struggles. If their basic needs of food, clothing, shelter and a warm safe place to sleep are not being met then it is extremely difficult for them to come to school and focus on doing what is asked. If I have a child who is lacking sleep or food for example, I will allow them those basic necessities while they are in my class. I will always remain understanding to the different situations that each family may face and the impact that it may have on the well-being of the child and their ability to learn. At the end of the day my goal is to ensure that I can provide families with the resources they need to help give them the equal opportunity for success while at school and in life.
