Report
Sociologists as City Planners Group Activity As a group, discuss and give a creative, critical, and specific response to the following questions. You will meet in Zoom, record the session, and submit the link to your group’s recording. There is an attached Word document for you to record the group's responses and take notes during the activity. Download the document and insert your group's answers. When you have finished the activity and recorded all your group's responses, click open below to submit the document. Each member of the group submits their own copy of the group document. 1. As a group, you have been asked to be consultants at a city planning meeting for a medium-sized city. This city used to be an industrial hub with many safe, friendly neighborhoods. As the industrial jobs have slowly left the city, many of these neighborhoods have become increasingly poverty- stricken and the city is beginning to see a rise in gang membership and other delinquency. According to social disorganization theory (pg. 101), why are these neighborhoods starting to see a rise in criminal behavior? The neighborhoods used to be safe inside the popular city, but as time went on the neighborhoods became dangerous due to gang and poverty. The social disorganization theory explains that neighborhood ecological characteristics directly links to crime. Because the neighborhoods turned to the worst, crime rates rose. 2. The city council is worried that social control is starting to fail in these neighborhoods. What type of community institutions could you build or strengthen to try to encourage a higher level of social control? I think that community buildings such as group community centers and libraries, other safe havens really could make a difference in these neighborhoods. It would allow for people to have a safe place to hang out and feel safe.
3. Another element the city council wants to focus on is helping to develop a sense of collective efficacy (pg. 104). What steps could you take to build this in a neighborhood? I think making people aware that there are people to talk to regarding issues, such as counselors in schools or advocates that are there to help. 4. Read the following article: The Next Slum? We often think of social disorganization as something that only affects urban areas, but this article shows how it might begin to influence suburban areas in the future. They mention “lifestyle centers” as a big draw for modern housing. What elements of social disorganization theory (pgs. 101-104) do you think would apply to having a “lifestyle center” in the middle of your town? Having a lifestyle center would bring more people to the city and the neighborhoods. It turns back into a hub and have a safer environment. The social disorganization theory claims that these hubs and safer neighborhoods lowers crime rates.
