Previous research has suggested that extinction is sometimes necessary for the treatment to be as effective as possible. The research question for this study would be if positive reinforcement is a more effective way to gain compliance for escape-maintained behaviors. 9.0 pts What participants are used for this study/researc h? The participants in this study were referred to the Behavior Analysis Research Clinic on the campus of the University of Florida or attended school for individuals with disabilities. The first five participants included 4 boys and 1 girl ranging from ages 4 to 8. Data was collected using rate of the behaviors that were exhibited. Functional analysis and positive reinforcement procedures were completed and compared during this study. What were the findings, or research outcomes? Please quantify if this is given? Was the research hypothesis(es ) supported, or not? For all subjects, positive reinforcement in the form of contingent access to edible items showed decreases in problem behavior. There were only two subjects that showed a decrease in problem behavior in the negative reinforcement condition. Compliance increased in all 5 participants in the positive reinforcement condition. Also, during the positive reinforcement condition, there were near-zero levels of problem behavior by the end of the treatment-comparison phases. The negative reinforcement condition did not produce this result. I believe the research hypothesis was supported when looking at the results of this study. 9.0 pts

Were the questions adequately answered? What suggestions would you make for future research in this area? I really enjoyed this study. I think the conditions that were compared were easily understood as well as the participants and their behaviors. Everything was clearly defined and easy to follow. I think the methods used were highly relevant to the research question. I really enjoyed the tables that were used in this study. It helped clearly show the effects of each condition. The questions were adequately answered throughout the entire study.
