Alexis Ulibarri Prof. Talpia SOC 318 SNHU 01/29/24 Milestone 2: Final Project Outline The housing crisis is an issue that concerns not only those effected by a lack of accessible infrastructure, but has a major impact on the environment and the economy as well. Land use plays a huge role in what makes a community sustainable, and according to sustainability professional Lukas Gutierrez, “the rapid expansion of low-density, single-use development on the fringes of cities—is responsible for the loss of natural habitats, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and reduced air and water quality.” Keeping in mind the perpetually increasing population density of urban areas, the demand for housing is causing a considerable increase in rent prices. The competitive housing market of metropolitan areas is causing more and more people to move outside of the city, where they have no choice but to become dependent on cars as their primary mode of transportation. The loss of habitat due to development coupled with longer commutes significantly increases carbon emissions from these areas. But what options do we have to combat this crisis? Many solutions to this problem are already underway in other parts of the world. Sustainable housing initiatives in the Philippines have created multi-use developments constructed from bamboo that are not only sustainable material-wise, but affordable and storm- resistant as well. Through this project they have proven that this method of construction can also be used in large-scale projects. In India, community-organized sustainable developments are utilizing renewable resources sourced locally to construct homes using passive design solutions. This method of design is intended to regulate indoor temperatures using insulation without the

Godrej Properties in India is also making use of rainwater harvesting and solar panels in an effort to further reduce emissions from these developments. As far as reducing the environmental impact of homes constructed long ago, there needs to be a decrease or abolition of fees required to modify and renovate homes. Making eco- conscious changes can be quite costly and the approval process deters homeowners from taking a step toward living sustainably. Thus, cutting these costs will lead to more accessible strategies for sustainable refurbishment. Zoning also plays a huge role in the availability of affordable housing. Many wealthy neighborhoods will protest affordable housing development for fear of the market value of their own homes decreasing. However, the sterilization of neighborhoods leads to a lack of diversity, failure for small businesses, and displacement of low-income residents. Gutierrez, L.
