The article Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do’s and Don’ts was really informative and provided a plethora of knowledge on the mistakes and safety measures that one should be mindful of while working with families as clients. The article pointed out several that I can apply to my work as a Social Worker and one was to avoid being entangled in the turmoil of one's family, chaos, is a crucial lesson that the essay highlighted. One must maintain professional standards at all times and therefore in my opinion they will garner the respect and trust of the client. Another advice that I will take with me from this article is to never judge the family’s current skill set. This is important advice if you want to be accurate when addressing their needs and establishing a course of action that is effective. In my opinion some of the benefits of working with families are; you get a chance to see the complete picture, it is like a puzzle. It helps you to understand the dynamics within a family. Therefore, you can address members knowing their capacity to achieve certain goals. It can also identify where your concentration needs to be applied more aggressively. Some of the challenges of working with families that I can envision are navigating complicated dynamics and interpersonal disputes. Some family dynamics could include physical abuse, drug abuse, or mental health difficulties. There is the difficulty of balancing the demands and viewpoints of different family members and remaining neutral. In working with families, it
could also be difficult to encourage the whole family’s involvement and possible face resistance from some to suggestions for change.
