MULTICULTURAL WINDOWDRESSING 2 The above image and the quote is just a nice façade that sounds to support diverse experience but in reality it is no more than window dressing or performativity. Though human beings may want to imagine that everybody is equal despite the differences in skin color, religion, and culture, evidence shows that human beings are significantly divided along racial, cultural, and religious lines. These divisions makes the quote just but an outwardly positive message that may serve as no more than windowdressing or performativity. For example, statistics today shows that racism is still rife in the US, and majority have encountered racism, either themselves being a victim or witnessing someone else being a victim. A research by (Lee et al., 2019) revealed that between 50% and 75% of Black, Hispanic, and Asian Americans have witnessed been victims of racial discrimination at least. Another 90% of these respondents said either themselves or something they know has been a victim of racial discrimination. Therefore, the rampant discrimination in country shows that the claim that all human beings are one people belonging to the human race is just white dressing because major rifts exist among human beings. Discrimination also occurs along the socioeconomic status like
MULTICULTURAL WINDOWDRESSING 3 it is narrated by DiAngelo in the book Multicultural Perspectives. According to DiAngelo (2006), coming from a poor background limited her from mixing and playing with peers. Therefore, there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that there is a great division among human beings and these divisions occur along racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic status. These divisions make the saying that all human beings are equal questionable because some still experience rampant discrimination. The statement can therefore be considered as multicultural whitedressing.
