ED504 Research Project Outline There are three parts to Stage 1 of the Research Proposal, which is the final product generated in the ED504 course. The purpose of the outline is to help candidates solidify a topic and approach to a research project for addressing an existing problem in the environment of their field of study. The problem must be identified and supported by existing data and should be applicable to the candidate’s field of study (i.e., library media, counseling, teaching). Remember, this is an outline. You need to provide sufficient detail to inform your instructor, but responses are not fully fleshed out. The complete details are provided in the Research Proposal and not here in the outline. To provide better guidance, responses to questions in the outline should not exceed one paragraph . Part 1 Data Gathering/Analysis Gather data previously collected at the classroom, school, or district level to justify the identification of a topic for study. OBJECTIVE: Identifying and analyzing a problem or weakness currently found in candidate’s field of study for the purpose of completing the Research Proposal assignment. Remember, the Research Proposal is a proposal for an experimental research design. RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS: 1. Identify the problem that you wish to research and write a problem statement. (i.e., the problem this study will address is poor student academic achievement.) (Chapter 1) Page 1 of 14
The problem is that children are less likely to achieve good grades, attain high test scores, and less likely to attend college as a result of family factors, personal factors and motivation. The dynamics of the family, the student's attitude towards learning, and the student's personal qualities affect their success in the academic setting. Children who are performing better in school more likely to come from a family setting that values learning, inspires academic attainment, and gives support and resources that are required for success. Students who come from relatives with a high socio-economic position are more possible to have access to resources like books, tutors, and technology that can be useful to their academic achievement Identify your hypothesis (Chapter 1) The hypothesis of this study is that family aspects, motivation, and personal factors play a significant role in influencing student academic achievement. 2. Elaborate on how you determined this was a problem and write a purpose statement based on your problem statement. (i.e., The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of socioeconomic status on student academic achievement .) The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of family aspects, motivation, and personal factors on student academic achievement. By examining how these factors interact, we can gain insight into how they contribute to student academic achievement and develop strategies to improve it. By doing this, we can identify ways to support students in achieving their academic goals. 3. Construct a graphical representation that allows for easy analysis of your compiled data that highlights your problem. Identify the source of the data and discuss its Page 2 of 14
credibility. Examples of existing data might include school district test scores, absenteeism reports, graduation rates, cost, ranks, divorce rates, living habits, etc. Page 3 of 14

Source: (Griffin, 2010) 4. Discuss the data in your graphical representation to confirm that a problem or weakness can be addressed that is appropriate to the scope of the required program. The data in the graphical representation shows that student academic achievement is significantly impacted by family aspects, motivation, and personal factors. This suggests that interventions that address these factors could have a positive effect on student academic achievement. By providing targeted support for students in these areas, educators can help to improve their academic performance. Additionally, this data can also be used to inform policy makers of the importance of these factors in student success. Page 5 of 14
5. Connect the problem or weakness to trends or patterns represented in your data. The data shows a strong correlation between family aspects, motivation, and personal factors and student academic achievement. This indicates that these factors are important in determining student success, and suggests that by addressing them, we can improve student academic achievement. This data confirms that these factors are key components of student success and should be addressed in order to improve student outcomes. Part 2 Literature Review You will conduct a literature review following APA format (most recent published edition) and become familiar with the scholarly debate surrounding your topic and what scholars and practitioners say about the best way to address the particular need or problem identified through the data analysis. OBJECTIVE: Reviewing and writing a Review of Literature on your chosen topic for the purpose of completing UWA’s Research Proposal assignment. RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS: 1. Provide a developed statement of the research problem that demonstrates a sound and focused understanding of the identified problem. The problem this study seeks to address is the influence of family aspects, motivation, and personal factors on student academic achievement. This research will investigate how the dynamics of the family environment, the student's attitude towards learning, and the student's personal qualities affect their academic performance. By understanding these influences, we can develop strategies to improve student academic achievement. Page 6 of 14

2. Identify best practice(s) that will be used to address the problem or weakness. This should be a theorist or theory that is known and documented in the research literature. Past studies and data collected have shown family aspects, personal problems and lack of motivation have a negative effect on children academically because of a lack of ability to focus and interest in classroom activities 3. Describe and justify a trend/theory that will be used to validate the use of the identified best practice(s) and clearly highlight the connection with the identified trend/theory to address the problem. The trend/theory that will be used to validate the use of Determination Theory is Self- Determination Theory (SDT). SDT is a motivational theory that emphasizes the importance of autonomy, competence, and relatedness for achieving success. This theory suggests that individuals are more likely to achieve their goals if they have a sense of autonomy, competence, and connectedness, and that these three factors are essential for motivation and success. By understanding how these factors influence motivation, we can develop strategies to improve student academic achievement. 4. Provide reference listings (in APA format) for a minimum of 10 sources (largely representative of the most recent five years) you will use to describe/justify the best practice and/or theory identified. Be sure to include only sources that show clear connections with the best practice(s) and/or theory/trend identified as viable responses to the problem/weakness presented. Page 7 of 14

Provide a summary of the literature and how it justifies the need for the study. You are synthesizing your collection of sources into a brief 1-2 paragraph summary. Do NOT describe the specific studies included in your sources. The literature on student academic achievement has consistently identified family aspects, motivation, and personal factors as key influences on student success. Studies have shown that these factors can have a profound effect on student academic performance, and that improving them can lead to improved student outcomes. This research seeks to further investigate the Page 9 of 14

influence of these factors on student academic achievement in order to develop strategies to support students in reaching their academic goals. Part 3 Methodology/Action Plan You will write a measurable and executable action plan on your chosen topic for the purpose of completing UWA’s Research Proposal assignment. The action plan must be APA formatted (most recently published edition). Collaborative resources must be included, and each category in the grading rubric must be addressed. Evidence of collaboration with appropriate stakeholders is required. OBJECTIVE: Writing a measurable and executable action plan on an identified topic for the purpose of completing UWA’s Research Proposal assignment. RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS: 1. Identify the population and provide a description of the participant sample and the sampling technique. The population for this study is high school students from a school district in the United States. The sample will consist of a quantitative survey of 180 students from the district. The sampling technique used will be a stratified random sampling of the district's students, with the sample size being proportionate to the size of the district's population. The research design for this study is a descriptive normative design. The independent variables are family aspects, motivation, and personal factors, while the dependent variable is student academic achievement. The data will be collected through a Page 10 of 14
quantitative survey administered to the participants, which will measure the independent variables and the dependent variable. 2. Justify the sampling technique and the sample chosen. The sampling technique used for this study is stratified random sampling, which is an effective way to ensure that the sample is representative of the population. The sample chosen is proportionate to the size of the population, which allows for generalization of the results to the population. Additionally, the use of a stratified random sample helps to minimize potential sources of bias and increases the reliability of the results. 3. Describe the role of all participants and the plan to prevent harm to them, including the plan for protecting student confidentiality and data. All participants in the study will be asked to fill out a survey, which will measure the independent variables (family aspects, motivation, and personal factors) and the dependent variable (student academic achievement). The survey will be administered anonymously, and all data will be kept confidential. Furthermore, the results of the survey will be used solely for research purposes, and the data will not be shared or used for any other purpose. Additionally, all participants will be informed of the purpose of the study and their rights as participants prior to the administration of the survey. 4. Provide a description of steps and sequence of steps required to complete a successful study. Step 1: Identify the population and sample size. Step 2: Develop the survey instrument. Step 3: Administer the survey to the sample. Page 11 of 14
Step 4: Analyze the data. Step 5: Interpret the results and draw conclusions. Step 6: Write up the results and present the findings. 5. Justify the plan of action with respect to the identified problem and purpose. Be sure to justify the connection between the plan and the expected impact on student achievement The plan of action for this study is to investigate the influence of family aspects, motivation, and personal factors on student academic achievement. The research design, sampling technique, and methods of data collection and analysis are all designed to provide insight into how these factors affect student success. By understanding the influence of these factors, we can develop strategies to support students in achieving their academic goals, which can lead to an improvement in student academic achievement.. 6. Define constitutive and operational definitions of key terms . Constitutive definition of key terms: Family Aspects: The dynamics of the family environment, including how family members interact, the level of support and involvement, and the communication between family members. Motivation: The student's attitude towards learning, including the level of interest, effort, and persistence in pursuing academic goals. Personal Factors: The student's personal qualities, such as resilience, self-efficacy, and self-discipline. Operational definition of key terms: Page 12 of 14

Family Aspects: The family aspects will be measured using a survey that assesses the communication, support, and involvement of the family in the student's life. Motivation: Motivation will be measured using a survey that assesses the student's interest, effort, and persistence in pursuing academic goals. Personal Factors: Personal factors will be measured using a survey that assesses the student's resilience, self-efficacy, and self-discipline. 7. Identify the variables in the study and define how each will be measured . In the study, children's performance and test scores of improvement are evaluated. The independent variable is implementing strategies with the guidance counselor to keep children engaged in schoolwork and assignments while in school. The dependent variable is higher grades and improved academic success long term. 8. Describe the data that is needed for the study and how it will be collected. Include a description of the timeline for the data collection . The data for this study will be collected through a quantitative survey administered to the participants. The survey will measure the independent variables (family aspects, motivation, and personal factors) and the dependent variable (student academic achievement). The survey will be administered online, and participants will be given two weeks to complete the survey. The data will be collected over the course of one month. 9. Identify any instrument that will be used in the study and its validity and reliability measures. The instrument that will be used in this study is a quantitative survey. This survey will measure the independent variables (family aspects, motivation, and personal factors) and Page 13 of 14
the dependent variable (student academic achievement). The survey will be validated and tested for reliability prior to use . 10. Describe any threats to the internal validity of the study and measures for control. The main threats to the internal validity of this study are selection bias, demand characteristics, and experimenter expectancy. Selection bias can be controlled by using a stratified random sampling technique to ensure a representative sample of the population. Demand characteristics and experimenter expectancy can be controlled by using double- blind techniques, such as having the survey administered by a neutral third party and ensuring that the survey results are kept anonymous. 11. Describe the limitations or outside interferences that might interfere with improved student achievement . There are several potential limitations or outside interferences that might interfere with improved student achievement. These include the lack of resources available to students, the presence of other competing demands on their time, the lack of access to technology, and the availability of support services. Additionally, external factors such as poverty, cultural and language barriers, and unequal access to education can have a significant impact on student achievement.
