FAMILY VIOLENCE 2 Historical Significance of Social Tolerance for Family Violence The historical significance of society tolerance for family violence spans many centuries into the past. This longstanding acceptability of family violence has shaped power relations, cultural attitudes, and legal structures. This historical phenomenon sheds light on human society's evolution and emphasizes the need to address this issue with urgency. This historical significance reinforces conventional gender norms, when males dominated households and women were subordinate. The patriarchal system allowed abusive conduct since violence was seen as a way of imposing authority and discipline, as well as perpetuating power disparities (Wilcox et al., 2021). Additionally, religious and cultural standards have shaped communal tolerance for family violence historically. Many religions and societies praised family life while promoting home hierarchies. The conventional family dichotomy justified abuse, as an acceptable compromise so that family unity and traditional norms could remain standing. Cultural and religious factors also contributed to the idea that family affairs should stay confidential and unimpeded, allowing violence to go unchecked. From back in history, weak legal safeguards for victims have also contributed to increased societal tolerance of family violence. Legal regimes generally valued family togetherness over individual well-being, especially for women and children, and it was easy and mostly acceptable to overlook cases of family violence. Lack of judicial remedy to family violence implications fostered the idea that violent behavior might go unpunished, ingraining family violence in society. In conclusion, the historical significance of social tolerance for family violence has thrown a long shadow over human history, increasing gender gaps, preserving cultural norms,

FAMILY VIOLENCE 3 and perpetuating the idea that family violence belongs in private rather than in society. Through the lens created by this historical legacy, it becomes evident that family violence is a significant issue in modern society that requires a community commitment to reform and eradication.
