Gianna Beasley February 7, 2022 Natalie P. Soc Section 110 3-2-1 Simmel Assignment Three: In his essay, Simmel describes the idea of a metropolis, a place of liberation from the binding mentality of the small community. He explains that this concept grants the individual more freedom to independently define themself. He also talks about the deepest problem of modern life in his opinion as being the claim that the individual has to preserve the autonomy and individuality of their existence in the face of anxiety-inducing social forces. Lastly, Simmel also defines the concept of urban life as something that irreversibly transforms one’s mind, not necessarily in a bad way, but forces structure on socialization in an urban environment. Two: I’m struggling to understand Simmel’s idea of value; he mentioned that value was created by the creation of objects by the people, and the separation of the people from the objects and the attempt to overcome the distance, but I’m not quite following the train of thought. Also, what might Simmel mean by blasé attitude? I know that he’s trying to describe the attitude of a “city-dweller”, but why is this concept relevant and or important? One: How can we relate Simmel’s idea of a growing metropolis to its effect on the mental and social life of students here at UC Berkeley? Can the concept be applied to present day college life?
