ASSIGNMENT 1 2 Assignment 1: Planning & Engaging Stakeholders Agency Information I am completing a field practicum at Mercy Health hospital. I was placed specifically on the third floor, which is the Mother and Baby Unit. Mercy Health has different markets throughout Ohio. I am interning under the Youngstown site, which is occupied by three hospitals: Youngstown, Boardman, and St. Joesph’s. Each of the three hospitals are under the agency director, Dr. Ronald Rhodes. Dr. Rhodes, Chief Academic Officer (M.D., FACS), office is at the Youngstown hospital. I will report to the site instructor, along with the manager care coordinator who manages the medical social workers at Boardman. The services that I will provide include working with women and families to assess their strengths and challenges during pre-pregnancy and after the women gives birth. I will work with families to aid them with access to long-term supportive services based on the effects of psychosocial and medical challenges that may arise. During a woman's pregnancy and after they give birth, I will work to assist with creating health and nurturing relationships between the parent and child. Lastly, I will advocate for the needs of the women and her family through resources within the healthcare system and in their community. Each of these tasks will be completed under the supervision of the site field instructor, Vicci Mosko, (LSW, MSW) and task instructor, Garret Kelsh, (MSN, RN). I will print out two pages of the field instructor letter to bring with me. I will also email the letter to so that they have a digital copy. Strategies that I will use to engage their support will include bringing a copy of my syllabus with me to the meeting. Using my syllabus, I will go over course material of 7401 and explain how the work that I am completing in my practicum site will help in demonstrating my knowledge through these assignments that are appointed to help students transfer what I am learning in my course to my field practicum. Personal strengths that I bring to this process is my ability to communicate effectively with individuals within different professions. I am a current employee with Mercy Health Boardman, and I have the privilege to work with interdisciplinary teams, which has increased my confidence when speaking with nurse managers, social work and nurse practitioners, and other professionals, when I need their expertise and advice to complete my work in patient safety. For context, when I first began working in healthcare in 2021, I was very intimidated by the nurses

ASSIGNMENT 1 4 and doctors, and knew little about medical social workers. As time has gone on, I have increased my awareness of medical social workers and the work of other professionals in the patient care relationship through hands on experience, research, and by putting myself out there to ask questions and learn from my mistakes. My second set of strengths is the ability to see different units as I can work on every unit as a float. Seeing how each unit is run, decisions are made, and the challenges addressed is beneficial to using a plan of action to provide me ideas for areas of interest in my evaluation project. Post-discussion Assessment My field instructor, Vicci Mosko, is familiar with the evaluation project as she had a project that was similar during her graduate program. This made the discussion with Vicci more seamless and easier to discuss. When discussing this topic with Garret Kelsh, he stated that he wasn’t as apprise on evaluation projects in social work, but that he understood how the course 7401 and the practicum work together to help students understand the fundamentals of conducting evaluations. For practical options on the topic for my evaluation project, Vicci discussed a few areas of direction that I might consider and where to look for scholarly research. Vicci Mosko and Garret Kelsh showed great support and stated ways to help keep me on track by discussing the evaluation project during our individual supervision meetings. Throughout the discussion, the engagement and support of wanting me to do well during my practicum was clear and appreciated. The field agency's needs are to keep them informed of my progress and ensure that I am staying on track with my 7189 obligations and my evaluation project. If I find that I am having issues with ideas, finding information or a lack of, it is important to speak with them within a proper timeframe, so that we can address them and have a solid foundation for the following semester (SW 7402).
ASSIGNMENT 1 5 The stakeholders in healthcare that are specific to the mother and Baby Unit of the hospital are the patients, healthcare providers, policymakers, and insurance companies. In the hospital setting, the patient is the most important as they come to the Mother and Baby Unit for pre-pregnancy care and care for after the baby is born. Patients and their families play a critical role in their healthcare needs as they advocate for their own health, the health of their baby and decisions about their treatment. The healthcare providers are stakeholders within the health systems, focused on short-term specific goals of their patient needs. The policymakers are engaged in patient-centered outcomes, health impact and various other factors that influence their decision making. Insurance companies are important stakeholders are they help women and families afford their healthcare. The role of insurance companies is to provide patients with the healthcare coverage needed to buy medications, see specific doctors, and receive treatment from healthcare providers. Patients are a key factor in my evaluation project as I consider health outcomes such as race and ethnicity and other risk factors that impact patients being able to have a healthy delivery. Healthcare providers are important as key stakeholders in my evaluation project as I consider the types of care they can provide patients with and how they can vary depending on population and funding for the Mother and Baby Unit to provide the necessary services and have adequate staffing. Insurance companies as stakeholders can affect or increase healthcare disparities based on many factors such as a patient’s socioeconomic status, race and ethnicity. When a patient is non-insured, this can also affect their treatment and impact the health of their unborn or newborn child. As policymakers the decisions made into which laws and regulations are implemented are important to my evaluation project as health is being placed in policies to
ASSIGNMENT 1 6 govern health issues, health disparities, and how underserved and diverse populations will receive treatment.
