2 Explanation of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act (ADAAA) The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act (ADAAA) was initiated September 25, 2008, and amended the American with Disabilities Act of 1990 (United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, n.d.). The main purpose of ADAAA was to clarify the definition of disability under ADA and make it simpler for individuals to gain protection under ADA. ADAAA also defined “major life activities and operation of a major bodily function,” and eliminated mitigating measures from being taken into consideration for eligibility (American College of Education, 2024). My thinking map (Figure 1) provides a visual that explains ADA/ADAAA, including the titles of ADA and the changes the ADAAA made to ADA, in easily understandable language. This thinking map will provide readers with a summary of ADA/ADAAA to build their knowledge of the protections that are guaranteed to those with disabilities.

4 Conclusion ADAAA amended ADA in 2008. The amendments expanded the definition of a disability, making it easier for individuals to gain protection under ADA and establish that they have a disability. My thinking map (Figure 1) above provided a visual that explained ADA/ADAAA, including the titles of ADA and the changes the ADAAA made to ADA, in easily understandable language, allowing readers to understand the purpose of the ADAAA.
