Ecomap 1. Discuss how this tool helped you conceptualize your current family situation and define your family. I had a method for categorizing my family members into groups before I finished the ecomap, but by showing how divided my family is, the ecomap assisted me in conceptualizing my family's condition. I found it useful to categorize my family according to the kind of relationships I think exist between us. 2. How does your definition of family differ from other approaches to defining “family”? I still define family the same way, but I now use a somewhat different perspective. A family is defined as "a group of one or more parents and their children living together as a unit or all the descendants of a common ancestor" in the Definition of Family, (2018). But as time has gone on, I've come to realize that family transcends blood relations. You could feel more like family even though you are an outsider because of the shared relationship. 3. Explain different types of diversity in your family and the effects diversity has on your family. My family has never been impacted by diversity, and I believe this is because we were brought up to love and respect others. Growing up in a diverse family was essential to us. Pearce et al. (2018) state that a better understanding of the variety of homes and families that raise teenagers can enhance parenting theory and research. I picked up on this early on because I grew up in a diverse family. Compare your family to the various types of diversity within family systems you will encounter as a social worker.
4. Discuss any new insights you gained completing this exercise. After completing the exercise, I now understand how we categorize family members and how we leave out those that don’t fit. This is one of those family tree exercises that leaves off the limbs. Being able to help strengthen the relationships between clients and family members would be gained from the exercise. 5. Why is it important to have clients complete an Ecomap? Refer to Social Work Disposition #4: Value: Importance of Human Relationships; Ethical Principle: Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships when responding to this prompt.   According to Virginia Commonwealth University (2023) social workers are able to see the relationships amongst their customers in order to decide what kind of assistance would be most helpful. In social work, ecomaps are a useful tool for examining the positive and negative effects that a client's particular network of interactions has on their life.
