Assignment 2: Investigating a Harassment Complaint This assignment provides you with an opportunity to further your understanding of workplace violence and harassment. You will investigate a harassment incident, determine if the incident meets the legal definition of harassment or workplace bullying, and suggest solutions to resolve the complaint. This assignment provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate the achievement of the following course learning outcomes: conduct employee investigations of workplace harassment complaints, and develop strategies to manage and prevent workplace violence and harassment incidents. Instructions Use Appendix A Harassment Investigation template (adapted from Workers Safety and Compensation Commission of Northwest Territories Canada, n.d.) to: 1. Collect background information and investigator notes Collect as much information as you can (e.g., names, department, position, alleged harasser response, witnesses, etc.), from the video below. While viewing the video, put yourself in the role of the manager who has been made aware of the unwanted behaviour directed toward the senior woman at her workplace. Remember that you are documenting the facts only, your documentation is objective, and your conclusions must be based on whether the facts support a finding of bullying/harassment, using the appropriate definitions. NOTE: As in-person interviews, an essential step in this type of investigation, cannot take place, substitute the words spoken in the video by the accuser (the alleged victim) and the respondent (alleged harasser). o Preventing Harassment and Bullying in the Workplace (5:48 min) This video contains references to U.S. workplace harassment /bullying definitions, which may differ from those in Canada.
2. Provide an investigation result Explain whether the actions portrayed in the video constitute unacceptable harassment/bullying behaviour as defined in the Act (see the Workplace Violence and Workplace Harassment resource). 3. Recommend next steps Based on your answer to Step 2 above, what immediate and long-term actions would you recommend the retirement home take once the investigation is complete to protect the victim (if applicable) and prevent workplace harassment and bullying in the future?
