“For the New Testament Bible Study Assignment, I will be using MLA formatting style (choose one: Turabian, A.P.A., or M.L.A.), and my chosen passage is John 14:1-12 (choose one: Matthew 15:32-39, John 5:1-17, or John 14:1-12).” LIBERTY UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF DIVINITY STUDYING THE NEW TESTAMENT NARRATIVES Submitted to Dr. Sanders in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the completion of BIBL 110 – B16LOU By Abigail Kagnew October 14, 2020
New Testament Bible Study Assignment Studying the Gospels Instructions: For this assignment, you will be studying a chosen narrative from the Gospels that includes a question asked by Jesus. You have chosen between the following three passages (in BRPA 1): 1. Matthew 15:32-39 2. John 5:1-17 3. John 14:1-12 You will use the template below in order to complete a study of this passage. In your study, you will use the skills of Observation, Interpretation, Correlation, and Application that you have become familiar with through your reading in Everyday Bible Study . You will also consult and cite at least three additional scholarly sources. I. Introduction and Thesis Statement John 14:1-12 discusses Jesus’ disciples, as they were anticipating and worrying about Christ’s death. The Bible also records Jesus speaking individually to Thomas, Judas, and Phillip about the promise of the Holy Spirit. Referencing the amplified study Bible, the two main topics in this chapter is the first topic of Jesus is comforting his disciples, which is seen in verses 1-6. The second point is Jesus explaining the relationship and unity that Jesus has with the Father which is from verses 7-12. Reflections on the Readings of Sundays and Feastm will serve as an aid in explaining the message that Christ is emphasizing to his disciples, reassuring them that He is with them (Sobb).
II. Observation A. I have read the passage in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. You will find a copy of the NASB, ESV, CSB, and NLT in your myWSB Library. o Yes o No B. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying 1. Main characters: (List them) Jesus, The 12 disciples, Main disciples: Thomas, Judas, and Phillip 2. Plot: (50-100 words) Jesus explains to His disciples that they should not be fearful, and they should trust in God. Jesus tells them the dwelling places in His Father’s house that He is preparing for His disciples when He comes back to take them. Furthermore, Jesus explains to His disciples that they know the way to the place; it is through Christ Himself because He is the way the truth and the life, that no one can come to the Father except through Him. Phillip then asks Jesus to show them the father. Jesus replies He is the father and if they have seen Jesus, they have seen the father. 3. Story structure: (50-100 words) Introduction : Jesus tells His disciples that they should not constantly worry, but rather they should trust in God. Inciting incident: Jesus explains to them that there are many dwelling places in His Father’s house that He is preparing for His disciples when he comes back to take them. Rising action : Jesus explains to His disciples that they know the way to the place because He (Christ) is the way the truth and the life, that no one can come to the father except through Him. Climax: Phillip asks Jesus to show/reveal them the Father. Resolution: Jesus then says He is the Father and if they have seen Jesus, they have seen the Father. Jesus then says to believe in Him, because by doing so who ever believes in Him will do great things as Christ did.

4. Question(s) asked in narrative: Thomas asked “Lord, we do not know where we do not know where You are going: so how can we know the way?” John 14:5 Jesus asks his disciples, “Have I been with you for so long at time, and you do not know me clearly who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the father: How can you say, ‘Show us the Father?’ Do you not believe that I am the Father, and the Father is in Me?” C. List basic observations about this passage using the “Key Questions” for observation. Remember to consult the list of items from the observation section in studying the Gospels in Chapter 36. This will help you be more detailed in your answers to “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.” This is also an excellent place to consult scholarly sources to provide detailed answers regarding context. 1. Who: -Jesus -The 12 Disciples 2. What: Jesus tells His disciples that they should not be worries or troubled, and that they should also believe and trust in God. Jesus explains to them that there are many dwelling places in His Father’s house that He is preparing for His disciples when he comes back to take them. Jesus tells his disciples that they know the way to the place because He (Christ) is the way the truth and the life, that no one can come to the father except through Him. Phillip asks Jesus to show them the Father Jesus replies he is the father and if they have seen Jesus, they have seen the father. Jesus then says to believe in Him, because by doing so who ever believes in Him will do great things as Christ did. 3. Where: -The lower city of Jerusalem 4. When: -During the Lord’s Supper 5. Why: -Why does Jesus foreshadow explaining the disciples that they know the way to the to the place of where Christ is going? (John 14:4) Jesus foreshadows this by later on explaining to his disciples that He (Christ) is THE WAY, the truth, and the life.
6. How: -How did Jesus know to comfort his disciples? Jesus knew that they were worried because their father, teacher, leader was leaving them, but not for eternity; for he has promised to return to take His people. III. Interpretation A. Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (100-400 words) explain what you think the author is trying to communicate in this passage. Remember to take into consideration that this passage includes a conversation that Jesus is having. Thus, this passage is both showing and telling us something. John 14:1-12 explains to us Christians that God will be there for His people. There is no need for his children to be worried for what lies ahead in life. Christ tells his people that he is the way, the truth, and the life; that no one comes to the father but through Him. This goes to show that Christ is truly the center of it all and that He is one with the Father. It is through one’s individual relationship with Him, will there be access to Christ, who is also in God. Access to Christ cannot be through s group of people but through individual relationship that one has with Christ. B. Look again at the questions asked within the narrative. In 1 paragraph (200 words) explain the purpose of these questions to the story, as well as how the particular question(s) that Jesus asked related to his relationship with the other character(s). The questions asked by Jesus related to the relationship of his disciples because it shows the relationship of father as he reassures His children. Literally Christ is the Father of His children. The disciples represent Christ’s children, and Christ is the Father. When Jesus asks, “Have I been with you for so long at time, and you do not know me clearly who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father: How can you say, ‘Show us the Father?’ Do you not believe that I am the Father, and the Father is in Me?” John (14:1-12) It’s like saying to a child “Do you not believe me to be your father? I made you and know you, and I am sure of you”. The purpose of the disciples asking questions represents Christ’s people/children in real life asking questions to Christ. Christ in returns comforts his disciples (His children) that they should believe and not be trouble hearted. He reassures them like a Father reassures his child because he is a father. It is a natural behavior that fathers have. This relates to the relationship Christ has with is children; A father and child relationship.
C. Based on your answers above, narrow down one principle from this passage. You should be able to express this principle in 1-3 sentences. Christ is a comfort to His children as promised that He will never leave them nor forsake them. He has promised to return and take His people, and that promise He will surely fulfill. Time after time he reassures His people reminding them who He is and what He is capable of doing. IV. Correlation A. How does this passage fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State what type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and explain why you believe this to be so. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. I believe this New Testament narrative fits within the “new creation” narrative of the Bible. Christ tells His disciples that He is preparing a place for them that there are many dwelling places in His Father’s house that He is preparing for His disciples when He comes back to take them. This fits in the new creation of the metanarrative of the Bible, because this is Christ’s promise to His people when He returns back again in His second coming. The place that Christ mentioned His people know the way to it because Christ says he is the way the truth and the life, that no one can come to the father except through Him. So because the disciples know the way which is Christ they will be able to dwell with him. B. How does this passage reflect other truths found in the Scriptures? State and explain at least one way that the principle of this passage can be identified elsewhere in the Bible. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. The principle of believing is sought out throughout the whole of the Bible. Without faith and believing nothing can be done. Followers of Christ believe and have faith in Christ although they

have not seen Him. Throughout the Bible, Christ encourages us people to keep the faith, many people in the word also encouraged people in the Bible and are still encourage people of today by reading the word to keep the faith. C. How does this passage reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ? State and explain at least one way that the principle of this passage identifies something of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. This passage reflects the person and work of Christ because He is Nahum the comforter. Christ comforts his children each and every day as He is the Father of His children. He has promised to never fail his children he has not done it and he will not do it. Because he is the same today and forever the promises he made two thousand years ago is still in full effect. This goes to show that Christ is the same for all of eternity; he will never change. V. Application What points of application can be made using the Four Questions for Application? State and explain 1 point of application for your life for each of these four questions. Your explanation for each of these points should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length. A. The question of duty We followers of Christ have the responsibility to remind out brother and sisters in Christ, that they should not be trouble hearted/fearful and have faith in Christ; as Christ mentioned to his disciples. As we are ambassadors of Christ, we are to represent Him and more. Because Christ did so shall his people do and more! as stated in John 14:12. We are made to reassure to our brothers and sisters in Christ, also non- believers that God will never leave nor forsake his people. So, us Christians should have a relating heart to comfort those who are afraid, just like Christ did. B. The question of character
This passage made me realize a few things. I asked myself if I was acting in the same manner of Christ. I thought to myself “Beatrice If you’re not comforting and reassure your brothers and sister in Christ as Christ did then what are doing?”. I realized although that I may be going through many things in life, that does not exclude me from being a comforting sister to someone in need, and it’s not only limited to comforting and reassuring. I also realized that it goes for so many other things. Just because someone is not comforting me and reassuring God’s goodness to me does not call for me to do the same for others. By helping a brother or sister in Christ, Christ can also help me at their point of need. C. The question of goals The questions of goals that I received from this passage is to be more intentional with my Christ like actions towards people. Having to help people in a Christ like manner should not feel like a chore, and it is my goal to everyday pray and ask Christ to help me with that goal. My goal is that I want to be able to attend to the need of God’s people whole-heartedly. I want them to see Christ shining through me, that when I speak into their life, they will know for sure Christ is the one speaking not me. D. The question of discernment I have realized that I need to pray and yearn for the spirit of discernment to decipher when comforting and assuring is right and wrong; as in figuring out which situation I am allowing myself to feed; if it is Godly or not. By asking God for the spirit of discernment, I know he will place my feet on the ordered path he has for me, so that I know what is right and wrong. VI. Conclusion Summarize your major points and concluding thoughts here. John 14:1-12 is a great message and has many messages within twelve verses. A lot of many things were brought to my attention while reading this scripture. I felt as though many times I am the disciples, being fearful and questioning God, but by reading the word I was reassured. I was told by my heavenly father that I should not be afraid and should believe in Him. He has given me strength to do what he has done and even far greater! I am very appreciative of this passage due to my current life situation, and I know these few verses will reside in me forever.
