BIBL 110 R EFLECTIVE R EADING T EMPLATE Reflective Reading Passage: _______________ John 3:1–12 __________________________ Use this template and the course texts The Inquisitive Christ and Approaching the New Testament to record brief notes for each step of the reflective reading process . Step One: Prepare Use this space to understand the key elements of context to your passage. Consulting and citing Approaching the New Testament , please complete the contextual information according to the information found in the course textbook: By consulting and citing Approaching the New Testament, who is the author of this biblical book (in 2-3 sentences)? According to the Approaching the New Testament, the Book of John was written by John the son of Zebedee. By consulting and citing Approaching the New Testament , when was this biblical book written (in 1 sentence)? The Book of John was written around AD 80. By consulting and citing Approaching the New Testament , what is the overall theme of the book (in 2-3 sentences)? The Gospel of John was written to provoke and inspire faith. It was written to show what true belief in the God of the Bible is, in a world full of misinformation about this God and how that faith can change how we live. Step Two: Read Utilizing either a translation of choice or creating a paraphrase of your own, use this space to re-write the full passage of scripture. Please do not copy and paste from an existing translation, but rather, write out the passage word-by-word in order to slowly reflect on the content. Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee, had a conversation with Jesus in the evening. Nicodemus said, 'Teacher, we all know you are sent from God Page 1 of 3
BIBL 110 because of the miracles you have done.' Jesus then replied, 'Unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.' Still not fully understanding what Jesus said, Nicodemus asked, 'How can a grown man be born again?' Jesus then replied, 'Are you not a religious master? If you can't understand these earthly things, how can I tell you about the heavenly ones? Step Three: Reflect Use this space to answer the following questions. Consult The Inquisitive Christ for insight into pertinent Gospel texts. If there is dialogue in the passage, who is speaking (in 1 complete sentence)? Jesus and Nicodemus are having a conversation. What questions are asked in the passage? Please list all questions located in the passage. What do you mean, can a grown man be born again? How are these things possible? Are you, not a religious master, how don’t you understand these things? How would you answer each of the questions asked (in at least 3 sentences)? For the first question, I would say humans reproduce human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. For the next question, I would say you cannot use your natural mind to comprehend the things of the Spirit. Regarding the last question which Jesus asked Nicodemus, I believe it is more of a rhetorical question. What words or phrases stand out to you, and why? Are any words/themes repeated? If so, share why you think there is repetition. Please answer with at least 3 sentences. The phrase 'Born Again' is used frequently as it is the main topic of this conversation. To be born again means to be created anew, to have the life and nature of God. It is to be born of the Holy Spirit—a spiritual birth, resulting in a new spirit born of God. What questions do you have as you read this passage? If you have no questions, please explain why this might be the case. Page 2 of 3
BIBL 110 Why do the Pharisees still want to crucify Jesus even though everyone knows he is sent from God? Nicodemus confirms that everyone knows this when he says, 'We all know... in John 3:2 Step Four: Pray Use this space to formulate a prayer to God, dialoguing with Him about what he may be speaking to you in this passage: Thank you, Father, for your Word. Thank you for speaking to me and teaching me about the importance and meaning of being born again. I love you, Lord. Step Five: Respond Use this space to contemplate how God may be asking you to respond to this passage in your life with him: I believe that God is teaching me about the importance and meaning of being born again.
