Reflection and Synthesis Report
Name: Krystal Whitehead
Week #: 8
Instructions
In the table provided below, you will complete your reflection and synthesis responses for this week. Be sure to complete each Response section. When referencing scripture or other materials, only include a brief or abbreviated summary along with the citation as these cannot be included in the required word count. When you have completed the document, save it to your computer and follow the instructions in your course to submit the assignment to your instructor.
1.
Did you complete all the assigned reading for the week? [Yes X or No ⃝]
2.
Article of Faith
Please identify the Article of Faith studied this week
Response: Article of Faith #7 - We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation
of tongues, and so forth.
3.
Explanation of Key Events and
Scriptures
Demonstrate your comprehension of fundamental truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and your ability to use the scriptures to teach them. Be sure to include specific scripture references from the assigned readings
Scenario: Imagine you have been asked by a family member or friend to share what you believe about the truths and events you studied this week. Share in your own words several
insights as though you are really trying to teach someone. Include at least three scripture references to support the truths you teach (you may reference them, but there is no need to quote them). Share your testimony as you would when teaching someone. Your response will be evaluated by the following criteria:
1.
200–300 words in length
(please include your word count at the bottom of the section).
2.
Include at least 3 scripture references
.
Response: In Moroni 7:33-38, Moroni tells us that miracles are not gone, but we need to have faith for them to be possible. I believe it is the same with our spiritual gifts. We cannot access them if we don’t have faith in Christ. If we don’t have faith do we even know that we have these gifts? Some of them are more apparent, but others are more subtle and
harder to see if we do not have faith. It is important to build our faith if we want to grow our talents and gifts.
We must be careful, however, when we are seeking gifts. 1 John 4:1 says that we need to make sure we are seeking gifts from God and not those counterfeit from the devil. Being able to tell the difference is a gift that we have been told over and over again to seek after and develop. That gift is the gift of discernment. I have heard it mentioned multiple times in General Conferences lately. D&C 46:8-9 tells us that we should seek the best gifts while remembering what they are to be used for so that we can
use them correctly to bless others. We should not seek the gifts of the spirit to lift ourselves up but to lift others. Only when we are using our gifts righteously will we be able to bless others and be blessed in return.
Word Count: 239 4. Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World
There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences
of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again.
Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own:
abortion
abuse/bullying
addiction
depression
divorce
domestic violence
energy/environmental issues
violence
gambling
genocide
homosexuality
international terrorism
materialism
natural disasters
pornography
unemployment
poverty
racial strife/hatred
religious intolerance/persecution
threats to religious liberty
same-sex marriage
suicide
Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about
the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know.
Write a response in at least 300-450 words
and list your word count at the end of your response.
5.
The world problem/issue I chose this week is:
Depression
Response: Satan will do everything in his power to try to make us believe we are worthless. 2 Ne 2:18 says “And because he had
fallen from heaven, and had become miserable forever, he sought also the misery of all mankind”. The truth is that not only are we not worthless, we are precious in the sight of God and we have been given gifts of the spirit to help others when they are battling with the lies that the devil tells them. Moroni warns us in chapter 10 verse 8 that we should “...not deny the gifts of God, for they are many…” Just because
we don’t have the same talents as others, it doesn’t mean that we don’t have any gifts at all. We have been blessed to also be able to develop gifts. We have been encouraged over and over again to seek these gifts. If we want to know what gifts we have we can pray for experiences to use our gifts and we will be given opportunities. We just have to be ready and open to following through.
If you are struggling to find your purpose, I would suggest for you to pray. Pray for strength against the adversary. Then you can pray to ask for direction. When you open your heart and mind and earnestly seek answers, you will receive them. They might not come in the way you expect and they might not come immediately, you will need to have a little patience and keep praying for strength every day. If you feel unworthy to pray for whatever reason, just know that you are a child of God and by that only you are worthy of talking to Him.

“Should you ever feel distanced from our Father, it could be for many reasons. Whatever the cause, as you continue to plead for help, He will guide you to do that which will restore your confidence that He is near. Pray even when you
have no desire to pray. Sometimes, like a child, you may misbehave and feel you cannot approach your Father with a problem. That is when you most need to pray. Never feel you are too unworthy to pray. …
“He will always hear your prayers and will invariably answer them. However, His answers will seldom come while you
are on your knees praying, even when you may plead for an immediate response. Rather, He will prompt you in quiet
moments when the Spirit can most effectively touch your mind and heart. Hence, you should find periods of quiet time to recognize when you are being instructed and strengthened.” Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “Using the Supernal Gift of Prayer,” Ensign, May 2007, 8, 9.
