Response: The major aspect of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that sets us apart from other Christian churches around the world is that the power of the priesthood has been restored to us through our church leaders. This power
is the Power of God on this earth. It is given to worthy men of a certain age by placing hands on the person’s head and reciting a prayer as part of the ordination. (Moroni 3) To be worthy to hold the priesthood, men must be
obedient to the laws of God and honor the covenants they have made with him.(D&C 132:7)
There are two types of Priesthood. Young men become eligible for the Aaronic priesthood the year that they will be turning 12. This priesthood allows them to pass the Sacrament, ordain others to offices of the priesthood, and when they are old enough, bless the sacrament and perform baptisms. At the age of 18, men become eligible for the Melchizedek priesthood which allows those who hold it to perform ordinances such as naming and blessing children, healing the sick, and bestowing the gift of the Holy Ghost to new members who have been baptized. (“The Keys and Authority of the Priesthood” April 2014)
The power of the priesthood can also be used as protection for us against those who would try to keep us from following the teachings of God. We can call upon the power of God in the name of Jesus Christ to protect us, we can have it. It may come in ways we do not expect it, but it will come. (D&C 121:16-22)
Word Count: 275 4. Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World
There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences
of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again.
Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own:
abortion
abuse/bullying
addiction
depression
divorce
domestic violence
energy/environmental issues
violence
gambling
genocide
homosexuality
international terrorism
materialism
natural disasters
pornography
unemployment
poverty
racial strife/hatred
religious intolerance/persecution
threats to religious liberty
same-sex marriage
suicide
Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about
the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know.
Write a response in at least 300-450 words
and list your word count at the end of your response.

The world problem/issue I chose this week is:
Protection from the priesthood
Response: To show the protective power of the priesthood, I would like to share a story of what happened to my dad one day while he was at work. This is a bit of an extreme case, but it shows how much protection we can be given. I was eight
at the time and had just been baptized by my dad and confirmed by my grandpa. My dad was a residential phone repairman and had a job at a house where he was supposed to fix a phone jack inside the house. The guy shows up after my dad had already arrived and let him into the house. He let my dad go about his business but stood behind him asking him odd questions. My dad was kneeling on the floor working on a specific phone jack when he felt a strong pressure and searing pain in his back. He immediately stood up and turned around and felt the same thing in his chest. The homeowner had stabbed him with a large knife twice and wasn’t about to stop. My dad told us that his first thoughts were of us and that he wouldn’t be there for us anymore. He felt a darkness start to swallow him up, but all of a sudden he was told to call on the power of God. He had been screaming at the guy to stop the whole time, but once he said, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to stop.” The man froze mid-stab and dropped the knife. He looked dumbfounded and it gave my dad time to get out of the house. He grabbed the knife and ran to his truck. Before he drove himself to the police station, this was in the middle
of the country and there were no hospitals nearby so he drove to the closest place he could, he yelled at the

neighbor lady to get back inside her house and lock the door. He didn’t want anyone else to get hurt. My dad was stabbed a total of eight times, three being about 5 inches deep with the others being mostly superficial.
He survived that attack because he called upon the power of God in his time of need and his need was answered immediately. If we want this kind of protection we should make sure we are living our lives worthy of the priesthood and using it to bless those around us when we can. To add to this story and show that it is not only the men of the house who receive the blessings of the priesthood I will share what happened to the rest of my family that day. My mom had told my dad not to go to work that day. He had just gotten over pneumonia and she told him to take one more day, which was unusual for her. Then she told him if he went to work to come home after lunch, which would’ve made him pass the appointment to someone else. When the news came that something had happened to a
phone man in the area my mom got a phone call, but they didn’t know who it was at that time. My mom was freaking out, but as she walked out to tell us kids that something was wrong, a feeling of peace came over her and she knew it would be okay. She was then able to tell the three kids that something bad had happened, but the Spirit told her it was all going to be fine. We all felt comforted because of the spirit that filled our home that day.
