Reflection and Synthesis Report for WEEK 1
Name: Krystal Whitehead
Week #: 1
Instructions
In the table provided below, you will complete your reflection and synthesis responses for this week. Be sure to complete each Response section. When referencing scripture or other materials, only include a brief or abbreviated summary along with the citation as these cannot be included in the required word count. When you have completed the document, save it to your computer and follow the instructions in your course to submit the assignment to your instructor.
1.
Did you complete all the assigned reading for the week? [Yes X⃝ or No ]⃝]
2.
Explanation of Key Events and
Scriptures
Demonstrate your comprehension of fundamental truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and your ability to use the scriptures to teach them. Be sure to include specific scripture references, focusing especially on restoration scriptures (Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price). Scenario: Imagine you have been asked by a family member or friend to share what you believe about the truths and events you studied this week. Share in your own words several
insights as though you are really trying to teach someone. Include at least three references to support the truths you teach (you may reference them, but there is no need to quote them). Share your testimony as you would when teaching someone. Your response will be evaluated by the following criteria:
1.
200–300 words in length (please include your word count at the bottom of the section).
2.
Include at least 3 references.
Response: We know that the Apostasy was foretold by many prophets. In 1 Ne 13:6-9 Nephi talks about the "great and abominable church" and how the people hold the things of the world to be more precious than the teachings of God.
When did these times start to become less dark and more enlightened? When the hearts of men looked again toward God. Even outside of reading scriptures about it, we have learned about it in history classes about the Dark Ages. It seems like life should get better as we move forward, but what would make a specific period in time so much
worse than times before it to call it the Dark Ages? It makes sense that it would be a time of confusion, power-
hungry people, and worldliness, the same things prophesied of. Like Nephi said in 1 Ne 14:1-2, if men turn to God they will no longer be "confounded". In D&C 86 1-3 we are taught about the parable of the wheat and the tares and
given some clarification as to what it was talking about. After the death of Jesus and the Apostles, Satan came to take
hold of the hearts of men and sewed hate in their hearts so that he could gain power. When we look at all the evidence we have and put it all together we have a pretty good picture of how things happened. The most important thing about this lesson is that if you have any more questions, you can pray and read the scriptures to get your own revelations regarding these truths.
Word Count: 266 3. Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World
There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences
of living in a fallen world. The readings this week of ‘
The Need for a Restoration
’ as well as the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again.
Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own:
abortion
abuse/bullying
addiction
depression
divorce
domestic violence
energy/environmental issues
violence
gambling
genocide
homosexuality
international terrorism
materialism
natural disasters
pornography
unemployment
poverty
racial strife/hatred
religious intolerance/persecution
threats to religious liberty
same-sex marriage
suicide
Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about
the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know.
Write a response in at least 300-450 words
and list your word count at the end of your response.
The world problem/issue I chose this week is:
religious intolerance/persecution
Response: In an ever-increasingly hateful world, we see so many people turning against each other. There is a lack of
love for our fellow man with a sense of wanting to do/be whatever we want to do/be and if anyone disagrees, we must hate each other. I am always trying to re-enforce love and regard for other people when teaching my son. I always tell him that we are all children of God and that no one is better or more important than another person. We treat everyone as we would want to be treated and we remember that God loves all of us. It makes me so sad to see the hate in the world today. We know that Heavenly Father is not happy about it when we read D&C 1:13-17 which says, “The anger of the Lord is kindled…They seek not the Lord to establish his righteousness, but every man walketh in his own way…” As Christians, we have seen persecution from strangers, neighbors, friends, and even family. The Lord will bless us when we do not retaliate against those who hate us, but rather show them the love we see is missing from their lives. I love Matthew 5:9 because it says that those who try to create peace are to be “...be called the children of God.” When we understand that being like Jesus includes being mistreated and abused, we can see that just like Him, we need to respond with love. I am not saying that we need to stand there and take the abuse, but
in our immediate responses, we need to remember that hate is of the devil and anger will lead us there. I know that when I have answered hate with hate, it has only gotten me in a worse mood and I have regretted my words and actions. When I have responded with patience and love I have been in a much better mood and I feel that I was blessed for my actions.
