Session 4 Questions
Read Genesis 37:1-36 in your Bible. What were the circumstances that led to Joseph’s brothers’ treatment of him?
The circumstances leading to the bad treatment of his brothers was brought on by Jacob loving Joseph more as he was born to him in his old age, and he made an ornate robe for him. (
Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011
, Genesis 37:3) His brothers were jealous and hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. (
Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011
, Genesis 37:4) The Lord gave Joseph skills in dreams and to foresee of future events. There were even hints that his siblings would eventually bow down to him, he shared the dream with his father and brothers which only made them hate him more. (
Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011
, Genesis 37:5-10)
Read Genesis 39. In Genesis 39, what character traits do you see emerge in Joseph in response to his encounter with Potiphar’s wife? In response to Joseph’s encounter with Potiphar’s wife, honor and loyalty emerge from Joseph. In this chapter Potiphar’s wife repeatedly tempt him with her luring to come to bed with her. Joseph whole heartedly chooses to honor and stay faithful to God and Jacob each time. He even speaks to her stating his position in the household and what her husband has
entrusted him with and then says to her, “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” (
Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011
, Genesis 39:8-9) This part reminds me of when Jesus was tempted repeatedly, and his response was similar. Stating the truth and choosing it.
Read Genesis 40 and 41. In these passages, what circumstances led to Joseph’s favor with the king?
The circumstances that led to Joseph's favor with the king were a series of events that began
with Joseph being imprisoned in a dungeon. In the same as the King Pharaoh imprisoned his cupbearer and baker. They both of had dreams while imprisoned. Joseph looked after them and read their dreams. What Joseph predicted would happen did occur. Pharoah had two dreams that disturbed him two years later. Nobody knew how to interpret the dreams. The cupbearer told the Pharoah about Joseph interpreting his dream because he had witnessed it. After interpreting Pharaoh's dreams and telling him what he needed to do to save Egypt, Pharaoh appointed Joseph as his second in command. (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, Genesis 40-41)
Based on this biblical account of Joseph, what characteristics do you see in Joseph that led to his position of influence and leadership? How does this connect to your readings during your time in this course?
The favor that Joseph had with the King might be characterized by a few different traits. It is important to him to honor and keep his position, therefore he works hard and stays true to his word. He also has a heart to serve other people and is willing to give of himself to assist someone else. He is not afraid to put himself in a detrimental path to carry out what is right. All of these behaviors help to develop a reputation for him as trustworthy, and he is loyal and devoted to God. He can advance in position if he meets the King's criteria. (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, Genesis 40-41) Since we have been discussing the way God intends Christians to conduct themselves, there is a complete connection to the materials that I was given to read for this class.
Based on your experience as a leader or with leaders you have worked with,
what are two principles of leadership you can take from the story of Joseph and
apply to effective leadership? Use the verses in the passages to support each
principle. Principle 1 - Developing an atmosphere of steadfast trust in God's instructions and
guidance is the best concept to follow. Regardless of the circumstances, seeking guidance
from God or making decisions based on adoration for Him cannot be replaced. Having
knowledge and making an intentional choice to choose Him and His ways honors God in
fullness and is the best choice to carry out a place of leadership. Joseph demonstrates

this when he steadfastly rejects the advances of Potiphar's wife, despite her persistent
temptations, Joseph declares, “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against
God?” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, Genesis 39:9) This
demonstrates his profound devotion and reverence for God, as well as his unwavering
commitment to his spiritual values. I personally believe in living this way, but it is
something you must dedicate yourself to. I have struggled with it often, but I believe the
more you press in through quiet time, journaling, reading the bible and/or just talking
with God, you will grow closer and there is a movement toward this living this life fuller
each day. Principle 2
- Demonstrating unwavering commitment to assigned work, irrespective of
one's present role recounts how Joseph carried himself with all that he did. He was
bestowed with the divine ability to interpret dreams and foretell future occurrences, as
described in the Bible. There were even signs suggesting that Joseph's siblings would
perhaps submit to him in future situations. (
Holy Bible, New International Version,
1973/2011
, Genesis 37:5-10)
This is a great and rare gift to have been give and he treated
it with loyal and mature respect. Demonstrating unwavering commitment to assigned
responsibilities, regardless of their significance, is a commendable trait of good leaders.
He had dutifully carried out the responsibilities assigned to him growing up, which
included looking to the flocks and monitoring the well-being of his siblings. Now as an
adult he has been prepared by the invitations and his response to carry having the
resilience and diligence that Joseph had in any leadership role is needed to follow
through with responsibilities no matter how the situation looks. This is another area I
struggle with but pray for growth in on a regular basis. Maybe that is why I saw this as
such a valuable principle. I hope to apply this to my life more and more every day.
