W09 Assignment: The Savior's Visit to America
Part One (of Three)
Spend 2 hours
studying the teachings of Christ found in 3rd Nephi chapters 11–18
. Highlight important teachings you find during your two focused hour of study. Don’t worry if you do not finish all of the chapters. Study deeply rather than quickly.
Reference to Passage found in 3 Nephi 11-18
SAMPLE Quotation from, and commentary on, something the Savior taught in these chapters.
3 Nephi 15:22-23
“And they understood me not, for they supposed it had been the Gentiles; for they understood not that the Gentiles should be converted through their preaching. And they understood me not that I said they shall hear my voice;
and they understood me not that the Gentiles should not at any time hear my voice—that I should not manifest myself unto them save it were by the Holy Ghost.”
I like how Jesus recognizes that even some of his most faithful disciples will not understand everything he says in the moment he says it. It takes time, and sometimes takes other events unfolding before we can understand all his words. While I think I understand a lot more from the scriptures than I used to, I know I still have a long way to go, and many things to learn about our Savior and our Heavenly Father’s plan. I want to hear His voice!
Reference to Passage found in 3 Nephi 11-18
First Quotation from, and commentary on, something the Savior taught in these chapters.
3 Nephi 11:35
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and I bear record of it from the Father; and whoso believeth in me believeth in
the Father also; and unto him will the Father bear record of me, for he will visit him with fire and with the Holy Ghost.”
Belief in Jesus Christ and God go hand in hand. According to Christ's teachings, those who put their faith in Him will receive a divine testimony from the Father, along with the presence of fire and the Holy Ghost. This doctrine emphasizes the interconnectedness of faith in both the Father and the Son. It implies that true belief results in a deep spiritual assurance and the sanctifying influence of the Holy Ghost in our daily lives.

Second Quotation from, and commentary on, something the Savior taught in these chapters.
3 Nephi 13:24
“No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other.
Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.”
To have God as our teacher, it is crucial that we love and serve Him above all else. This means that we should prioritize our relationship with God over the materialistic pursuits of the world. We cannot serve God and worldly possessions or desires at the same time. We must choose one or the other, as having divided loyalties will inevitably lead to conflict and confusion.

Third Quotation from, and commentary on, something the Savior taught in these chapters.
3 Nephi 18:15
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him.”
In this teaching, the Savior emphasizes the importance of constant prayer.
The phrase "verily, verily" adds weight to this instruction, highlighting its significance and certainty. Jesus also stresses the reality of the constant presence of temptation and the danger of being led astray if one fails to be vigilant and prayerful. This teaching encourages a proactive and persistent approach to spiritual warfare, emphasizing the need for continuous connection with God to protect oneself against the deceitful tactics of the devil.
Part Two
Identify three flag phrases you that you highlighted and share why you thought they were important. This will
determine if you understood how to use the "Flag Phrases" Skill.
Reference to one of the verses where the identified flag phrase is found.
SAMPLE flag phrase, with explanation as to why it seemed important.
3 Nephi 11:23
“Verily I say”
I looked up ‘verily’ and it means ‘truly’ or ‘certainly’. Maybe this is a way that the Savior emphasises a spoken statement. Maybe it’s kind of like an exclamation point, but at the beginning of the sentence.
Reference to one of the verses where the identified flag phrase is found.
First flag phrase, with explanation as to why it seemed important.
3 Nephi 11
“Baptize”
The Lord spoke about baptism on 14 different occasions. This fact highlights the significance of baptisms for the Lord and underscores how important it is
for us to recognize its value.
Reference to one of the verses where the identified flag phrase is found.
Second flag phrase, with explanation as to why it seemed important.
3 Nephi 16:4
“Remnant of their seed”
A remnant refers to a small remaining quantity of something. In this particular section, the discussion revolves around the Gentiles' belief or non-
belief in the Gospel and how they are presented with an opportunity to gain knowledge of their Redeemer.
Reference to one of the verses where the identified flag phrase is found.
Third flag phrase, with explanation as to why it seemed important.
3 Nephi 18:5
“Behold there shall one be ordained among you, and to him will I give power that he shall break bread and bless it…”
Becoming ordained involves the ordaining minister laying their hands upon the head of the ordained individual while praying for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and grace required to fulfill their ministry. This typically takes place during Sunday meetings, which also include partaking of bread and water as
part of the sacrament.
(Sorry that this one was a bit longer)
Part Three
Practice the scripture study skill of visualization
and pick one of the events described in the chapters you read and share WHY you particularly wish you could have attended and write a 200- word essay about what it would be and why.
Share the reference to where you found the event you chose to write about, and why you chose it/what you learned as you visualized the event here.
It's a shame that I was not able to witness the extraordinary event when Jesus Christ appeared before the people in 3 Nephi chapter 11. I can only imagine the awe and reverence that must have filled the air when He revealed His wounds - the holes in His hands, feet, and sides. It must have been a powerful and moving moment, one that would forever be etched in the minds and hearts of those who witnessed it.
The significance of Christ's sacrifice cannot be overstated. Our very existence on this earth is a direct result of His selfless act of love. Through His Atonement, we are given the opportunity to repent and eventually live with Him again. But truly grasping the magnitude of His crucifixion requires a deep understanding of what He endured for us.
Personally, witnessing the actual wounds from the crucifixion would undoubtedly leave a profound impact on my life. Seeing them depicted on statues of Christ is one thing, but being present at that moment and seeing the physical evidence of His sacrifice would be a life-
changing experience. It would allow me to fully comprehend and value what He has done for us and inspire me to make sacrifices of my own in His name.
